Every time I see the phrase "environmental portraiture", I think of all of that ugly crap I see all over social media. I clicked on that link ready to cringe. What a pleasantly surprise! That was some very well executed photography with top notch composition!

In the land of Instagram, sometimes you forget what good looks like.

I wonder if Arnold Newman has a high degree of cultural literacy? Does he know about his subjects than an average shooter on Instagram?. For example, his portrait of Albert Krup the industrialist that worked enslaved Jews to death in his German factory. He made him look like a monster.

To be fair, Mr. Newman has assistants helping his shots.

Shooting in an uncontrolled environment makes it much tougher. I think Gregory Heisler worked for Newman.

Newman established control. Studio is just another method. Compare to Avedon who, like Newman also did both, yet generally kept his images simpler (mostly free of props and environment). Control, signature styles.

Studying newman was something that seemed to be a necessary prerequisite. Every undergrad clamored for the next best environmental portrait...that and everything had to be printed with the film rebate/edges visible. Newman was a great artist and portraitist. Good to see his work get more time in the spotlight.

Newman was a jew and he knew well who Alfred Krupp (not Albert Krup) was and what Krupps Of Essen did, which was why he lit Krupp's face from below on purpose to make him look like Satan.

Arnold Newman talks about taking Alfred Krupp portrait

Thanks for the video. My wife and I visited Poland and toured Auschwitz. It was a life changing experience. From that experience, I understand where Arnold Newman was coming from. One shocking part the to tour were stories of Nazi soldiers that went to work at the camp like it was a 9-5 job. A normal that was dystopic. I feeling that the U.S. is entering a phase of the same dystopia under Trump .

This is a brilliant thread.

Would be hard to name a famous professional photographer who isn't "culturally aware."

I'll note that many of the rest of us became aware of America's dystopia decades ago. Jews, blacks, and other minorities were aware further back than that.
