I just got a NIB Aristo for my Beseler 23C II XL. Can regular VC filters be used w/it? Thanks.

CC40Y filter in large enough size can be difficult to find. I've "modified" an Aristo head with a Rosco 30Y gel and seems to work fine. More discussion here, including stacking a 30Y and 15Y.

30ccY is easy to find and only cost a few bucks for a very large sheet. Rosco #4530

I think it's the older one--there is no mention of any model or wattage number on the original packaging or the instructions--just that it will last a lifetime. It says "H.I. 23, Pre "B", 8x8, & SP25.

The older Aristo W45 tubes give a distinct cyan-colored light. If your tube gives "white" light, it's the newer one and works just fine with VC filtration. The older one will too, just the contrast grades will be spaced differently. VC paper just needs a spectral range from green to blue.

HI probably indicates High Intensity, and is likely the older, bluer tube (W45).

i have the D2HI (the v54 bulb).
why don't you call voltarc and ask them what you have ?
they can probably tell you by the code on the housing ...
and if it is the old bulb they used to retrofit the new bulb in there too for like $80
( they used to a few years back )

I checked about a year ago. As I recall, it was much more that $80 - but I could be wrong. Certainly worthwhile to check.

Well! 2 opposing answers??
Not only that but just to make matters more confused, I thought the one that looked "cyan" was the V54 and the one that looks whiter was the old kind.
I think it's actually the increased green in the light that makes it look different from white.

After reading about all this, I went straight to split-grade printing w/ mine, and never got a set of VC filters.

No markings on tube--just a single white bulb. Actually, the white diffusing disc is not attached--does it press on?

I've seen / handled 4 or 5 of these. The white disc just sits is the housing ring below the light.

The V-54 lamp should look more green. Here is some info on the lamps:
https://www.light-sources.com/wp-co...colors_and_spectral_distribution_charts_0.pdf

A good reprint of a Howard Bond article on the V-54 is also available on this site. Installation on a 23c is easier if you have an extra condenser housing to put the cold light into. Else you will need to remove the glass from your housing. Makes switching back to condenser harder.
