hey all,

i was at samys the other day looking through their inkjet(ugghhhh, will explain further) papers, and i came across the Hahnemuhle rag papers. Boy, I was impressed. They had some samples of b/w images printed on them, and they had nice feel, along with a seemingly nice tonal curve.

There was one that was a roughly 320gsm, textured (albrecht durer?) that was very nice. it had a little bit of a tooth to it.

i am wondering if there are any fiber papers out there that are like this. other than ones i would have to coat myself(which i don't want to do =P )

(reason from above) I have been asked to print some of my work for a gallery-type showing at a local school. i told them i could do some really nice prints (they want me to show 10 or so), but they wanted to do the printing for some reason.

i want to do fb prints for display(especially to the public), but since they want to do the printing, i think i may decline their offer. just because i won't have control over how my scans will be printed digitally.(weird situation i know)

if anyone has an idea, it would be great, cause i have some negs i would want to print on this kind of paper.

preferably in 11x14 if possible.

thanks

If you don't print the image it's not really your work unless you told the person printing it exactly how to do it. I would skip that one.

The only textured black and white fibre based darkroom printing paper is a Silk finish paper made by Slavich in Russia and imported and sold by Freestyle in the USA. Your only other choices in wide distribution are Glossy and Matte. I think Efke had a Suede finish paper, but I am not sure if it is still available..again Freestyle would be the vendor.

Luminos (actually Kentmere papers) used to have several papers which I really liked but were discontinued; Charcoal and RC ART were great. There was talk at one one point about them being started up again, but I think the plans fell thru. Perhaps Simon from Ilford/Kentmere will see this an jump in.

You might still be able to find Fomatone 532 or 542. Silverprint, for example, according to their website still have plenty of 542.

I haven't seen a print made with the new 532-II/542-II versions, but I understand they aren't anywhere near as textured as the originals.

Bergger Fine Art Premium is a Cotton Rag paper similar to some of the Hahnemuhle range. Be careful with your choice of developer to take advantage of its silver rich emulsion

I am resurrecting this thread bcs I have exactly the same question as the OP and want to make sure everyone who might have some knowledge on this has weighed in on the question:

What is the most textured, or most matt, b&w paper you know of? And, like the OP, I have in mind a surface similar to Hahnemuhle Smooth Fine Art or other cotton rag papers used in inkjet printing.

Maybe the previous posts have exhausted the topic. If so, can anyone compare the ones mentioned above as regards surface texture so I can be sure and get the most textured paper out there?

Thanks

Hahnemuhle inkjet papers for the most part (probably not the baryta paper) are papers they have made for years (the company has a very long history) and have subbed for inkjet, so if you find a surface you like, you might try getting an unsubbed version and trying liquid emulsion or making your own emulsion. People have tried coating inkjet papers, and there is usually a problem getting the emulsion to adhere to the paper. Some unsubbed papers may need some sizing so they don't soak up too much emulsion, and some may not have sufficient wet strength to stand up to processing, but experiment, and you can make something interesting that no one else is doing.

The only paper left unfortunately is Bergger Fine Art Portrait Silver Supreme.

Matt, heavily textured and very luxurious.

I picked up a huge roll of Kentmere Art Document on ebay which may be an option.

Try searches for
Kentmere Art Document
Kentmere Art Deluxe

Pick up a sample of Foma 532 II Nature - it has a rough eggshell type finish. The older and discontinued Foma 532 is a cheaper alternative to the Bergger paper and has a watercolour paper texture. Again, you might be able to pick up the last stocks.
