Are There Any 4x5 Ratios Twixt that and 8x10?

As a standard size. I've a 4x5 ratio negative
which should be printed to that ratio but do
not wish to go 8x10, at least for starters.
The 5x7 won't do it. Dan

You could always cut 4 sheets of 4x5 out of one sheet of 8x10 and just contact print.

The 4x5 is 10x12.5 cm. The usual image size from a standard cut film holder is 3.75x4.75 inches. For some reason, 5x7 film is 12.5 cm wide and 17.5 cm long, while 5x7 paper is 5x7". If you have tried using 5x7 paper in a 5x7 cut film holder, you'll know that means a session with the paper trimmer. The short answer is neither the 4x5 film nor the image on it is exactly 4x5, but 8x10 paper will hold 4 of your images.

That wasn't much help, but at least it may keep you from cussing at film holder makers for not sticking to the advertised dimensions.

I hope I understand what you are asking. Do you have a 4 bladed easel? Then you can make it any size you want on a larger piece of paper. Even a 2 blader will do the job, but you can't usually float the image in the center, if that is what you want to do.

Those are standard sizes? How about 6x8?
What it comes down to is the mounting, mat
plus window plus frame. All off the shelf. Seems
to me quite a jump from 4x5 to 8x10.

The frame in question was tightly composed at
taking; 6x4.5 with an exact width to length ratio
of .77; slightly less square than the .80 4x5 ratio.
That 7x9 or preferably 6x8 would do. I suppose
I should be prefab shopping. I could make to
size myself but, a bunch of small custom
mats and windows?

the 6x8 is probably more likely to be found as a pre-cut mat size, but neither are "standard" anymore. Also bear in mind that any standard pre-cut mat is going to crop almost 1/2" total image area (1/4" off each edge).

But my nominal 5x7 film measures 4.945" wide by my verniier caliper. The 5x7 paper is 5x7 inches. Nominal 5x7" flm will fit in an actual 5x7" holder, but not vice versa.

This is a bit off the original post, but remember to check it next time you have your 5x7 mamera out.

Maybe the image sizes are a closer match, but the nominal sizes of 7x9 and 6x8.5 don't match the aspect ratio of 4x5.

Well, it's 7.2 x 9 to be precise. And there's also 5x6.25, 6x7.5, and 7x8.75 . None of which are anything resembling a standard mat size.

Take the long dimension, any length, and multiply by .8, or divide by 4.

I think the 12.5x17.5 cm film is nominally 5x7". The other way doesn't explain why the nominal 5x7 film holder is too small for 5x7" paper. But most of us will never try it, so why quibble?

Eh yes - my explanation might well be confusing:

'5x7" film' is smaller than 5" x 7", at about 125x175mm. By 'nominal 5x7"' I meant 5" by 7", which would be 127x178mm - which coincidentally is very close to the standard size of 13x18cm film. And 5x7" paper really is 5" by 7", or the size of a 13x18cm film.

It's all back to those pesky cut sheet film adapters for glass plate holders. The glass plates were "full size", so that defined the outer dimensions of the film adapters. To fit inside the film needed to ba a few mm smaller than the outside of the sheath.

Here's a good one, 5.5 x 6 7/8, an exact 4x5 ratio. Make
that x7 and you've 4 from 11x14. Subtract a 1/4 inch all
around for a very good 6x4.5 full frame match.

I've likely a few more full frame 6x4.5 needing printing
so will need a custom easel. Happens to very nearly
half way twixt a 4x5 and 8x10 in sq. inches. Dan
