I've a beautiful lens in an old Linhof shutter. It needs some attention (the shutter) but can probably be salvaged; it's a good piece of gear.

But I'd prefer a newer Copal shutter. Assuming it's the correct size (I believe it's a 1) can I simply screw the lens elements a new shutter? Is it more complicated than that?

Copal shutter sizes are here. The thread size of the Linhof is going to be the same as one of the major shutter makers, since I don't believe Linhof made their own, but labeled shutters that had been built to spec by somebody else.

just to add onto what whitey said

sometimes element to element distance won't be the same
in other words ... with the elements screwed into the new shutter
the distance between the 2 elements has to be the same ..
shims and spacers are used ...
you will need to make yourself an aperture-scale ..
its not hard ... but will take time to figure out.

have fun !
