Are light seals/baffles really necessary?

I recently had a problem with the winder jamming on my Hasselblad 203 FE. Took it to Hasselblad USA in NJ where the only technician in the USA who works on that particular model works part time. He examined my camera and found a plastic light seal had broken causing the problem. Replacement cost $300. However, he recommended not replacing it, with the caveat that once the dark slide is removed, I fairly quickly take the photo. As long as I didn't leave the dark slide out for any length of time, all would be fine. He then did a quick clean of the body and declined to charge me for this service!

FWIW, this was the second time I've used Hasselblad USA, the first was for a CLA, and I have to say I am very impressed. The have a different person who works on the 5xx cameras but I found them willing to spend time talking and answering my novice questions. They take tremendous pride in their work. I highly recommend them for servicing your Hasselblad equipment.
