QUOTE=Sean;1953820865]Hi All,

Just an update. I was slowing development for a bit waiting on a few more point releases of our new software. The dev environment went to their 1.5 version which was a fairly new build. We've upgraded from 1.5 to 1.5.1, 1.5.2 and now 1.5.3 has been released. This puts the new version of the software well within production level for us. I've had a few hiccups with freelance coders and finding a way to get the gallery imported. I might have to migrate our current gallery to a system called "photopost". So our current vbgallery-->photopost-->new gallery system. Photopost has an importer for vbgallery and our new gallery system has an importer for photopost. I plan to install photopost this week and see how that goes. Once that's done the site migration will be fairly straight forward. I've also found a new migration coder that should suit us better than the guy I was using for tests. This is taking far longer than I expected but my goal is to get this rolled out before the New Year. Thanks![/QUOTE]

I don't know if the new system will have "groups", but if it does, it would be nice if there was a sidebar option to show recent activity in joined groups.

Thanks for all your efforts!

If you see this, Photopost is what Photochimps uses. I don't know that we're on the most recent (though I think we might be fairly close), if you want to check it out. And, yes, I know I owe you - I'll shoot you a note.

Thanks Bethe. Looks like we've got it covered at this point.

*another quick update for those interested. I've brought in my longtime freelance coder Clement to help with this migration. We've worked together for years and I brought him in as I no longer trust these 3rd party migration specialists to fully understand exactly what we need done. They got us to a certain point but have been too blase for the finer details. Clement and I are now re-working some things and are in the process of moving the dev environment to a completely isolated server where we can test a full complete simulated migration. It's going to be hard to progress this during the holidays but we're looking at a few simulations during this time to at least see where things stand. Then hopefully early Jan. we'll see about rolling it out. Initial new site will be a migration of APUG User data, Forums, Gallery, Classifieds and Social Groups. The rest can follow after that as soon we can get to it. More soon. Thanks.

Ok, big progress over the last few days. It took some doing to but we now have APUG and the new test site completely cloned onto a separate isolated development server (note the url):

This will allow us to do some trail runs of the full migration with zero worry of breaking the production system. Things should move faster now as we can begin to simulate a full migration, iron out any kinks then apply what we learn to the actual production server. Stay tuned.. :smile:

Bravo, Sean. Should you need naive testers to kick tires or try to break things - let me know.

Once we have the dev server running a fully migrated version of APUG I plan to have an open invite for all to login and kick the tires. This should identify any major issues. We'll definitely want to remove anything annoying and add any missing functionality. When everyone feels good about the new version we'll then roll it out here.

Just a quick update. Full migration testing on the dev server is underway this week. Once we feel confident of our method we'll soon apply it to this server. Thanks again for your patience!

Another quick update. Things are going very good, so much so we're looking at doing the migration at the end of this month. The importing is very tedious involving many custom scripts and hours of migrating data. I anticipate it will be around 24-36hrs to import all the data, another 12-24hrs to adjust permission structures throughout the system and setup url redirects from any old links on the net. Another 12-24hrs of general testing, performance adjusting and general tweaking, then we'll re-open. Once we re-open we'll be fielding and actioning requests for any adjustments or features. During the outage apug.org domain will be redirected to a chatroom page (or virtual pub :tongue: ) where you can hang out. The chatroom will have live updates of our progress as well. I'm really excited about this upgrade, I can't fault the new software at all, it's fantastic.

p.s. a few nice updates will be improved classifieds. Still in a thread style format but with sales tools allowing you to open/close/mark sold etc. A feedback rating incorporated to that as well. Another cool addition will be the "showcase" which will allow members to create a virtual showcase of their photography equipment and share that with others. This can be your own private documented inventory or shareable for others to see. The gallery system is vastly improved, forums, PMs and everything else is vastly improved. Our new resources section will contain articles, FAQs, wiki, and downloadable materials such as old magazines, books, instruction manuals and much more (copyright permitting). Social groups will be vastly improved. I could go on but you get the idea :smile:

Thanks,
Sean

I'm as giddy as a school girl going on her first date! Great work Sean, Zenforo is a good choice. A monumental task you and your team have taken on. May the force be with you.
