Sean,
Are you still using Sharpshooter or have you moved on to something else?

Mozilla's Firefox browser seems to have a strong RSS client built in, but it doesn't recognize the APUG rss feed.

I haven't dug into it much, but it seems to either be a mime typing thing or the lack of a .rss extension on the URL. Firefox places a [RSS] icon in the window's status bar if there's an RSS feed on the page. Works fine on some other pages like Dead Link Removed and http://slashdot.org/ , but it doesn't happen when I view the main apug page, the page for this thread, or the list of forums. There's a tutorial of sorts on the Mozilla site for manually adding RSS feeds to your bookmarks (so-called "live bookmarks") at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/live-bookmarks.html , but it requires that the feed URL end in .rdf or .xml, which leads me to believe it might be a mime typing issue.

ideas? Maybe I need to write a page of my own with the right kind of link in it, but I'm betting this would be useful to more apuggers than just me.

Oh heck... as long as I'm being unreasonably demanding, I might as well queue up another suggestion that it would also be nice if you could have an RSS subscription both to the top of the member journal tree as well as to any particular member journal (and if it's yours, have the option to update the journal through RSS.)

-KwM-

I know that this is really old news ... but, I've been playing around with this the last couple of days, and it seems that the APUG feed is not generating a valid DTD that the RSS readers expects.

oh joy. I could have done without someone resurrecting this thread so I would see it and know that I can spend even more time at work visiting APUG!

The RSS feed works properly with Safari's RSS on Mac OS X Tiger! If any of you guys is using 10.4, I suggest you try organizing RSS feeds with Safari, it's pretty swell.

Would be nice if there were seperate feeds for each language, or at least a soley English feed for us Americans.

Also would be nice if the feed contained the post that instigated the feed -- though not the whole thread. Though I guess this might cut down on advertising hits on the site.

Sean, I just noticed that the entities in the syndication content do not get expanded when I use Safari's RSS. For example, I get:

Forum: B&W: Film, Paper, Chemistry Posted B

I haven't seen it happen in the headlines, but that could be just because the recent posts did not use them. Perhaps we could start a "blah & blah" test thread to see how the ampersand looks like.

Thanks for the feedback. The rss feed definitely needs some work, another item for the todo list

Update on the ampersand business: no problem when they are in the title (e.g. "J&C Website", etc).
