Hello Friends,

I am going to be moving from MA to Southern NH before the end of the year. I am interested in meeting some large format shooters in the Nashua / Manchester area.

I share studio space in Lowell and I'd like to do some large format shooting in Lowell of the mills and canals in addition to the opens spaces around Nashua.

If anyone is interested in doing some large format shooting around Merrimack Valley, please let me know.

Thank you.

Sincerely.

I am sure if you pick some possible dates for a gathering you will get more than just S. New Hampshire APUGers.
I would be interested in driving up that way, but my weekends are starting to get busy with duties at the VPC and the LF cancer benefit in CT later in Oct.
Keep us posted as to what you have in mind.

I'm thinking of starting something in the Spring. Fall is going to be too hectic with moving into the condo and then the holidays and snow.

I was at VPC last month with Mr. Ritter and Mr. Barlow with one of their workshops. Nice place. Downtown Brattelboro is a pretty place.

I am with the Valley Photo Center in Springfield MA... a little south of Brattleboro.
You went to the VCP. I think bdial is part of that organization. A good group up there.
Spring time would be great, plenty of time to make plans. Good luck with the move... I hope all goes smoothly.

VCP, VPC it get's very confusing
Yes, I've been involved with VCP for a bit, and as of a couple of months ago, a member of the board. Glad to hear you liked it.

I'm an idiot! I have the brochure for Vermont Center for Photography on my computer table. I shouldn't do deep thinking after 10pm LOL.

I used to drill at Westover ARB in Chicopee, I used to spend my annual tours there. I wish I had known about VPC, I would have gone down to see it when I got off duty.

Waiting until Spring will also give me time to find good places to make tripod holes.

Have a good day everyone!

In the meantime, take the brochure, check the box that says "I'd like to become an exhibiting member" and send it in. We need more APUG people there.

There's some good stuff in western Mass, Eastern VT, Southern NH. In between VCP and VPC is the Hallmark Museum of Photography in Turners Falls, MA. This month they have a show of Paul Caponigro's work.

I was thinking about that  Currently I have six photos hanging at the studio I share. For VCP, I would want primarily large format prints.

Navy is right. Westover, that which is still used for the military, is manned by reservists for the most part.

I'm in Maine, but i'd meander to south NH if it meant I had a group of folks to help me make heads or tails of my (rather humble) LF camera. (speed graphic)

Now that the warm weather is approaching, I thought it would be a good time to resurrect this thread. The past couple of weekends I've been driving around the area and I've found some interesting places to shoot. I plan on doing more exploration in the coming weeks to find other places.

The New England APUG Members are planning a get together in Manchester, NH at the NH Institute of Art to photograph and share work for the day. Perhaps you would like to join us.

I live in Wilton and work in Nashua. There are a lot of good spots out here. What kind of locations are you looking for.

Pulpit Rock and the surrounding woodlands in Amherst NH are a great place to hike and shoot. Pulpit Rock itself is a glacial formation that is quite "photogenic" although getting to the base of it can be a bit tricky if there is still ice or snow on the ground... not out of the question at this time of year since the area is fairly sheltered from the direct sun.

I live in Amherst NH. In the surrounding areas there are many nice outdoor areas I like to go and relax and take pictures. Here are a few of my favorites.

Beaverbrook land in Hollis has many nice hiking trails and I've take a few nice shots there over the years.

The Heald Tract in Wilton is nice.

The Joe English Reservation in Amherst also has some nice trails and ponds.

These are all especially nice in the winter. Spring brings mud, so I'm not as keen to get into the woods then. I also like to just drive around the back roads and try and get lost. Have found some nice images that way as well.

I enjoyed the APUG event this past weekend in Manchester. I'm looking for ideas of places to go for another APUG shoot in Southern NH. I've been here for only a little over six months and I haven't found a lot of places yet.

NavyMoose, it was nice meeting you last weekend at the Manchester event. I had earlier suggested a few of my favorite places. In addition to those I generally like to drive around the more rural areas for pictures. Also if you like hiking there are lots of waterfalls in the white mountains, some not very far up the trail.

What type of things are you looking for?

What you described is pretty much what I shoot. Last Summer I spent time in Franconia Notch shooting waterfalls and I hiked up to Artists Bluff.

The Whites and Kanc are tougher to do on a day trip.

I haven't been in SoNH long enough to find the less populated areas.

If you can please post some of the places you talked about in this thread, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you

NavyMoose,
From me as well, it was nice to meet you.
Obviously, there isn't as much open country in SoNH as in the Whites, but there are some nice areas.
Working west from where you are, the area along 122, from Milford down into Groton MA. There are several farms and orchards and good rural landscape views

To the north and west;
Routes 47, 136 and 31 form a loop around Crotched Mountain, through the towns of Francestown, Greenfield and Bennington. There are good spots along those roads, especially 136 between Francestown and Greenfield. Farther to the west and north there is Hancock NH and route 123 from there through Marlow has some good spots. Most of these places don't require much, if any hiking.

Straight west from Milford, Temple and Pack Monadnock mountains, then there is Monadnock Mt. There are state parks on Pack Monadnock and Monadnock, also in Greenfield.

For urban landscape, Milford and Amherst might be good. Farther west, Peterborough, Jafferey, and then Keene.
A little to the south and in Western MA Quabbin Reservoir which you could spend years working. I'm sure that PapaGene will be up for an excursion there just about any time. (He is the expert on Quabbin). Google Quabbin, and you'll get a lot of information about the place.

I've wanted to visit Chesterfield Gorge, which is west of Keene for a while, I've never been to it, but drive by a lot.

Finally, there are good spots in and around Brattleboro, VT, depending on whether you prefer urban or open landscape.
