Hey New Englanders,

Drew B. recently suggested to me the idea of hosting an APUG get together for those of us in the area who are interested in dry plate photography. I think it's a great idea, and after chewing on the logistics I figured I'd toss it up here to see what the interest might be.

The idea is to host the event at my place here in Brookline, NH, where we can talk about all things dry plate, tour the "Pictoriographica World Wide Corporate Galactic Headquarters" and my setup for fabricating and coating dry plates, and then go shoot some plates and develop them.

I'm thinking sometime in the February / March time frame, on a suitable weekend perhaps near winter break or spring vacation, or on a Friday (I work a 9/80 schedule and have every other Friday off).

How's that sound?

Post here if you're interested, and would be able to attend in that timeframe. I posted here in the New England region subforum, but of course anyone who could make it is welcome to attend no matter where you are. If there is sufficient interest then I'll suggest a couple of dates to see what works best.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I am definitely interested. I don't do dry plates now, but am interested to know more and to see how you make them. A weekend works best for me.

Interested, though I don't think I'm planning to get into dry plate.

Close enough for me! I'll pick out a couple of dates which could work and we'll go from there.

Like some of the other respondents, I'm not currently working with dry plates but would still be interested in seeing how they're made and in meeting up with some of my fellow photographers. Fridays generally work for me.

In is an abbreviation for people using unorthodox gear.

I am interested! I am completely content with my Hasselblad System V for now but the Engineer in me wants to see how it is done . . plus I admire your images in the Gallery . . . Any day works for me!

Ok just talked to the wife and here are two days that will work.

23 February (Saturday)
23 March (Saturday)

If the first date works for everyone, let’s plan for 23 Feb with 23 March as a backup date for weather.

How’s that work for ya?

I’ll flesh the itinerary out, but here’s my intial thought on how the day would play out:

Morning arrival, meet and greet.
Overview of dry plate-making
Tour of the “factory”
Get your plate holders loaded.
Break for lunch
Shoot some plates (either around the house or down at Potanipo Pond which is nicely photogenic)
Develop plates and check out results.
Wrap up, pack up, and then digress to local restaurant for dinner/drinks and swap stories for as long as you want.

As for supplying plates and gear... I can provide two plates for whatever size you are shooting (donations accepted but not required.. and I’ll have more for sale if you want), and if you need to borrow a holder I can accommodate that too for 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, and whole plate. I have plenty of developer and fixer, too.

So if that date works, just post that you can commit and what size you plan on shooting (don’t worry about locking in a format size until the second week of Feb when I set aside / coat the necessary plates).

First 7 to commit get to come, just to keep the logistics reasonable.

Cheers,
Jason

I'm in for Feb 23rd. Will be out of town March 23, so I'll hope for good weather. I don't shoot dry plate but interested in the process. In addition to hard hat and steel toed boots for the factory tour, can we bring "stuff" for lunch or will we be visiting someplace local?

We could all bring a little bit of something and have like a potluck at the house... that or we can go to Chrysanthi’s which is a fine little restaraunt near Potanipo. I kind of prefer the former because it’s cheaper but up to you fellas. After we’re done for the day, we can scoot on over to that restaraunt or the Alamo which is a new BBQ bar and grill here in Brookline.

I have an all-weekend commitment so couldn't make Feb 23, can do March if that's what it ends up being. Oh well, the show will go on.

I’m in for February 23. Looks like March 23 would work too. I vote for going out for lunch.

Ed

That works just as well and is easier to plan for. Whoever brings the smallest format picks up the tab. Just kidding, just kidding.

I'll put you down for the backup day, Steve.

Sadly I won't be able to make 2/23 but 3/23 would work for me.

Noted.

If March 23 ends up working for everyone, I have no problem planning for that date.

Just keep posting if 23 Feb works, though.
