What a gorgeous exercise in tonality and composition. That image is so rich in every way!

Exactly. The other night shots in that exhibition show equal mastery of his medium. With some photographers one might say that he did all this despite lacking one arm, one eye, and the Zone System; but he was so proficient he made all that irrelevant.

EDIT: I didn’t put that very well. What I meant was that to dwell on his disabilities is to do him a disservice: there is nothing to excuse.

He did a lot of work after the Nazis took over, especially at night because they did not want free Photography.

And during the actual war, he could not go out with his camera, so he did many still lifes in his office/studio. Some of them

I felt were quite like visual Haiku.

They left him mostly alone because he was a WWI veteran hero and did not pose a threat they felt with only one arm.

He also made photographic still life statements around the 1968 uprising in Czechloslovakia.
