Anyone use the CV 15mm 4.5 v1 on a Leica M5?

I have this lens but am not sure if it will damage/touch the meter stalk on the M5.
This is the first version that is not rangefinder coupled.
Anyone here with actual real life experience know if it is ok to use?

Have you tried contacting Stephen Gandy at CameraQuest, the U.S. distributor?

I just took a look at my copy and it may clear the arm but considering how hard it is to find someone to repair the M5, I wouldn't risk it.

No I haven't. But that is an idea. Not sure if he still sells the V1, but maybe he has notes.

Does the lens really protrude that deeply into the camera? (photos would be fun here )

I did not, but as I have other Ms, I have not risked using it on an M5.

p.s later today I will compare the depth protrusion to other lenses which work fine on the M5. There are lenses - like the 7Artisans 50 1.1 - which must not be used on the M5 as they will hit the meter stalk.

Here is the 15 4.5 Heliar LTM next to a 28 2.8 Elmarit-M. Both are at minimum focal distance and the Voigtlander has the lens cap on to bring the two lenses to approximately equal length. I haven't measured them but here is a visual reference:




The Voigtlander looks like it extends a bit more into the body. It may not hit the M5 stalk but it sure looks to close to try. Maybe a broken CL would be a good test body.

First off, that is a gorgeous 28 Elmarit Asph. Whoever you bought it from must be a stand up guy and popular wid da ladies.
But back on topic, no that does not look promising, every mm counts so I wouldn't risk it.

I got the lens from a dood in SOCAL who has both a M7 with a Summilux and a fifty dollar Kodak Ektar in the same bag.

On subject: My rough estimate is the Voigtlander extends a bit more than 1/10th of an inch further into the camera at MFD. A little too close for comfort considering how hard it it to find someone to work on the M5. Works great on my M4!

Measuring from the front flange of a Rayqual LTM -> M adapter mounted on my M5, I'm getting a plunge distance of ~17.8mm to the face of the metering cell. As long as the distance between the 'face' of the lens flange (without an LTM -> M adapter) and rear element when focused at infinity is less than this, there should be no chance of collision.
