It has been a while since I have used this. Question - I know where the sun is etc ... but how do I know how high up is the sun and it won't be blocked by a hill and ditto how low is the sun at sunset?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the web based app or the iPad version?

I have the iPad version handy right now. You need to first select the gray mountain icon on the right hand side (third one down from the top). This enables the geodetic mode.

You can now plant two flags, a red one and a gray one, on the map. The app will tell you the distance from the red to the gray flag, the elevation change and the max altitude degree. This information coupled with the position of the sun or the moon should help you decide if your view will be blocked.

I have had the web based application on my laptop for years, but I have yet to use it.

There is a do Hickey that you drag to the point on the map you are trying to see over.

Here's a screen shot of the web based interface. You will see that as I look east toward the sunrise at 5:59AM, the sun is just rising over the horizon (-0.1 degrees). However, there is at least one hill between me and the horizon. The difference in altitude between the hill and me is 187m. The sun needs to be at least 4.24 degrees above the horizon for me to see it.

Thanks for that example!

What's on the other side of the hill and is it in full sun?

Don't really care, it's a pointless comment from me.
