Not really sure if this post belongs here, but it looks like lighting equipment...

Does anybody know what a Hosemaster TURBOFILTER is used for?

To my understanding it is a variable image diffusing device:

A rotating diffuser obscures the image path repeatedly. One can chose to fire a flashlight either with the image beams on-obscured or obscured.


-) The ratio between both makes the degree of diffusion in case of a simple setup.

-) If one uses several lights selectively aimed on different parts of the subject, the images of these parts can get different degrees of diffusion.

I asume the latter to be the actual point behind that device.


(I see this device for the very first time, but this is what I make of it.)

For a while the Hosemaster was used alot in commercial studios.

There was a light painting fad going when this came out. It has my vote for worst product name ever.

It's one of those names that only make sense at all after you have fully understood the working of the device.
In thise case the selective lifghting; which can be achieved by using a nozzle.

(At least I assume that is what "Hosemaster" is derived from...)

Kind of a large color corrected flashlight, great for lighting hard to reach places.
Often used in a blacked out studio.
Often used with a soft focus filter during part of the light painting.
A beautiful effect but for a while it was so overused that it's hard to look at now.
Aaron Jones was the master, lots of people used his techniques but I'm not sure if many had his aesthetic.

This is a Turbo Filter, not a Hosemaster per se but a Hosemaster product.The Turbo Filter, like the Hosemaster is extremely cool when used with skill, finesse and creativity.

edit: It would really be a good idea and a great experience to take the opportunity to play/experiment with this.

Yes, I agree. I would have thought it had something to do with developing or washing.
