USA had several of these as well for electrified districts - the pantograph was there to activate signals only -- there was no other purpose (no hidden electric motor in the engine ;-)

Ohio Operational Steam

Chama is nice...been there done that, but Ohio has a treasure trove of operational steam locomotives. Here is just one of many. Shot on 4x5...I guess that's medium format if you also shoot 12x20.

Click on the teaser to open a page of photos of 489 getting re-flued at the shops in Chama New Mexico. These were done with the $65 Autocord. OK admittedly a snobbish step up from the Ciro-Flex, but hey I had to travel for these.

4070 still running? I thought Cuyahoga Valley stopped running this one in the early 1990's. Where'd it start running again?

And its not narrow guage, unless of course you are comparing 4' 8 1/2" with the old Russian 5 foot guage or now 4' 11 7/8".

No. 4070 is in pieces and will probably never run again due to funding issues. The Ohio Central Railroad has 4-5 operational steam locomotives of various configurations and sizes. They used to run the Sugarcreek train and recently have been doing runs in the Cuyahoga Valley where 4070 used to run. The Ohio Central has a full time Steam Division dedicated to maintaining and restoring steam locomotives. There are several more in the yard awaiting restoration. All of these are standard gauge, but anything steam still operating on track is an exception these days because of insurance and liability issues. If a steamer breaks down on commercial track, the track's owner will bring a bulldozer in and push it off the track on its side to keep freight moving. Consequently, most track owners don't want to allow steam on their track.

4449 (4-8-4) is due to go Portland, Oregon to Michigan in June (and back). Standard Guage. It regularly operates around here - either on Portland & Western track or on the OMSI line down to oaks park at Christmas.
maybe you can can get up that way to make some images.
thanks for update

The UP 844 will be running (well its out now actually) across Wyoming on its way back the Cheyenne next week. I'm thinking of getting out to see it on either the 10th or 11th (anyone want to join me?) . They also run it each July between Denver and Cheyenne coinciding with Cheyenne Frontier Days. A lovely engine but they team it with a modern Diesel, I think just to be sure it can be moved if something breaks. That run to Denver is on a very heavily used freight line.

Looks like a Shay from the side here. I built one from a kit once long ago. They sure look busy on the road. My uncle's father was an engineer for the P&LE railroad and I used to walk 2 blocks to the Roundhouse to watch them get up steam in the AM or service them. I even got to ride in the cab once, in an 060, but that is another story.

if it was a shay. It would not have a steam chest on the left side. I can see the wheels well enough to identify which locomotive this might be except that it is not a shay.

Jim;

I know I'm wrong now. Everyone has pointed it out.

I still cannot see the wheels though and the steam chest looked odd to me for some reason which is why I raised the initial question. In fact, what I was thinking of for a bit was a climax, but of course the angle is wrong.

I don't know enough about the narrow guage railroads and wished I did. You see, I should take my own advice and keep silent about things I don't know enough about.

these mikados on the DR&W narrow guage were outside frame - only the running gear is outside the frame, with the wheels inside the frame. You'll find it harder to see the wheels compared to the normal inside frame engines.

I love these photos. The black and white makes them timeless. I'm a railfan and I am thrilled that this kind of work is still being performed. I want to thank you for sharing these wonderful images.

Can you please tell us where you took these images?

Thank you!

Not sure whose you're referring to but you might enjoy a trip down memory lane in one of my galleries. Somewhere squirreled away are a bunch of slides, many from the same era, but finding and scanning them may be a ways away yet. As to still being performed, that could be stretching a bit in my case, as many of the shots are from the 1960s and 70s. I have visited some tourist railroads more recently, but don't think the shots are on line. There are a number of tourist lines and railroad museums here in Pennsylvania, but I fear I've not been as obsessive about them as when I was in my twenties -- sigh!
