There is one used gear shop in Salt lake called "Howells" phone # 801-359-4592. they have a lot of new and used stuff in almost all formats, but bring your checkbook. it's not a place if you are on a budget. the pricing is fair and correct but not cheap, he knows what it's worth.

I haven't purchased any LF gear local except for private sellers, (aka garage sale or want add) and a 4x5 enlarger from Mr. Howell. It wasn't cheap as I could have got on that auction site,, but I felt I came out ok because I didn't have to pay to ship it, and I was able to personally inspect it before I purchased. The standard camera shops here are mostly digiP&S and DSLR oriented, clerked by kids who know everything about nothing. If there is something else, I have missed it. An exception is Pictureline, with a good staff, and by far the most comprehensive photo professional store in the area that I know of, and stocks darkroom stuff, some paper, chems, and small things, mostly for students. The LF stuff they have is 4x5 film, and they sell holders, but no cameras, lenses, etc. Also Howell's, as Tommy said, is worth visiting. If there is something else, I have missed it.

Pictureline is great on special orders. They don,t stock LF but they can get anything. Most of my new gear was ordered from them. Talk to lesle, he knows LF well.

You have Howell's all wrong. It is not a store, It is his private museum. I think he hates selling the older items. Great guy and fun place to visit. and no he won't sell the old boxes of AZO. I tried several times.

We are staying in Moab for 3 days and will be in Kanab for 1 night so will try and find the place. Thanks.

You can t miss it....it is just down the street from the cafe and the owner parks 4 wheel drive toyota land cruisers used for photography excursions just across from the store...it is the main street going through town on your way to the infamous Colorado City, small town with most houses looking like a small hotel and having an unusually large number or bedrooms.... by the way, it is in a lovely backdrop setting

Another wife?? I hear the job comes with between 65 - 80+. :surprised: We were in Kanab a few weeks back on a fine Sunday AM and I was dis-appointed the camera shop guy wasn't around. Appears to be a highly interesting place and is probably more a labor of love than anything.

I've spent hours in the Kanab shop. But I have a stash that if Jim ever gets his toukus down to So. Utah, that will blow his mind. A guy who goes out to abandoned old houses, and has collected photography gear that was just left behind. He has hundreds of cameras and old lenses, that he knows nothing about. Is this of interest Jim Galli?

This is the stash that the little green men mine. I couldn't believe it when I saw it all. He has for about 20 years collected old photo stuff not knowing a thing about it, but liking the idea of having it all. I don't even know what all of it is. He has cameras and other stuff filling a trailer home to the brim. He doesn't live in it since it is wall to wall equipment. It is even painted green.

Robert it helps to call ahead. BTW it is his wife that teaches the harp and handles that part of the company.

Looking for used gear.

Howell's is overpriced, you'd be better off shopping elsewhere, but he probably has the best selection in SLC. There is also a shop not too far from downtown, Forster's Camera Service:
http://www.forsterscamera.com/cart/home.php

I purchased my Crown Graphic there quite a few years ago and they had a few LF items in stock. It's certainly not their specialty but they get things in every now and then.

Also the bulletin boards at PictureLine often have a few pieces of LF gear too.
Dead Link Removed But that requires you to visit and hope they have something, and then track down the seller...again not their specialty but may be worth a look. But picture line does sell sheet film, at least last time I was in there.

Well I've finally arrived in Page AZ. Will be here for 2 days and hope to plug a few tripod holes ha ha. So does anyone have any recommendations on a good private tour guide. I don't want to do the crowd infested slot canyons. Preferably a very small group, say a couple of local APUG'rs, plus Wayne and myself and the guide.

Any suggestions?? I'm staying at Motel 6.

Eric,

Head out to mile marker 20 (ish) (highway 89 north out of page) on the Utah side. There is a BLM station there. Talk to them for some ideas.
