Very cool camera, this is also incredibly high end for 1917 (in my humble opinion) as the first rangefinder (another Kodak) was only release a year prior and it has a pretty advanced shutter.

I'm wondering if it will open by depressing that round button near the tripod socket and sliding the whole casing? If I remember correctly, you set the speeds by putting them where you want them on the conventional round dial, and then pushing that little lever on the right as far as it will go to set the shutter. This camera has a rotating blade shutter, very unusual, and it's how they were able to achieve such high speeds.

I have this camera and use it 2-3 times per year. I liked the camera so much that I had Sherry Krauter do a cla on the shutter. I'm lucky that the bellows on mine has no light leaks, I'm pleasantly surprised with the images I've taken with it. Much sharper than I ever thought possible, and larger than 6x9. I get about 5-6 frame per roll of 120. There seems to be a light leak problem at the rear of mine so I just use a darkroom bag covered over the back. Mine still has the original stylus that was used to write on the paper backing. Hold the camera with the back facing you. The advance knob should on the bottom left. Press the 'button' with your right thumb and carefully pull it apart. The film casing with the bellows and lens should separate.
