I am so excited that one of our Museums is bringing a collection of 130 of Ansel Adam's greatest photography. It starts tomorrow at Gilcrease Museum. I've seen a few of his originals in the past but being able to spend time looking at 130 is amazing. Can you believe they are going to set up a still life mimicing one of Adams with a digital camera, printer and lights that you can play around with the aperture and light settings to see if you can re-create the look of the original. I can't wait to see how that works. Do you think some people will be surprised that it's not so easy???

How did you like the exhibit? I've had the privilege of seeing three exhibits of Ansel Adams' work and was overwhelmed by the photos every time.

It was wonderful. You can not truly appreciate his work until you see it in person. The detail, the tonal range and the composition. They were breathtaking. Not too many were that large but they were impressive. The exhibit also contained cameras such as Ansel used and biographies of photographers he was close to and those who influenced his work. I plan to go back again before it leaves.

What are the dates? My wife said something to me and as usual, I forgot.

They seem to glow, don't they?

You are so right. It made me ashamed of some of the prints I thought we "ok". I now know see the bar is so much higher. I'm sure I can never attain that level of expertise but it's ok to try I think.

I would love to see Ansel Adams works. He is awesome. I did see Clyde Butcher(I hope I spelled his name right) works and they were great.

This sounds like the show John McCallum and I went to in Christchurch NZ. It really is something!

The last AA show that I went to also featured many of Clyde Butcher's photos as well. I enjoyed his work but thought that he went a bit too strong with the enlargement. I would have liked them better if they were a bit smaller.

I don't recall Clyde Butcher's work in this show but I was mostly focused on Ansel Adams. I did read all the history and bios though, it took quite a while just for that part.

Don't know if this is the same group of prints. From another website's description of this same set: "All the photographs in the exhibition are originally from the collection of The Friends of Photography, ... Adams donated most of the works to The Friends of Photography and it is the largest known collection created by Adams himself. All of the works are now in the collection of Lynn and Tom Meredith" of Austin Texas.

Apparently, the Friends went bankrupt a few years ago and the collections were for sale. The story is that Tom Meredith intended to buy 4 prints as a present for his wife, and ended up buying the lot!

Anyway, saw the show yesterday (it's up till the beginning of next year). What can one say? I have been privileged to see 4 major exhibitions this year: Group f64, Brett Weston, Richard Avedon, and now AA. It's all a lot to take in. I've got to become a better printer ...

My wife and I had the pleasure of passing through Tulsa the week before Thanksgiving and stayed overnight to go to the exhibit. It is simply wonderful. I had seen many Adams exhibits before, including the 'museum set' He printed just prior to his death. This exhibit surpassed that. There were the well know images, but the were many I had never seen 'live' before and many more I had not seen in books.

Get to Tulsa and see this show.
