I remember back in college during the 80's when "Moonrise Over Hernandez" was sold at Christies for for 20K. Adams said it wasn't worth that much money. I hope today's news shows that somehow, photography has greater value as art now.

I think the sale would have put a big smile on his face! I remember an old interview i read when Ansel talked about how he now gets $100 a print!!!!

These particular prints appear to have all been mural-sized, which makes them much more rare, and also people seem to love anything huge in size these days (see insane ridiculous prices for Gursky prints). So I think that all helps explain these wild prices. Afterimage gallery has a 16"x20" Moonrise printed in the 70s for $48,000. The older vintage prints are obviously worth more and are more rare.

I could be wrong but i thought the prints from Ansel in the 70's were done under his supervision but not by his hands. I read that somewhere but don't know if its 100% true.

What a shame the collection wasn't kept together.
A very real piece of photographic history scattered to the four winds.

See? Who sez you need to be perfect? If I remember properly, he made the print on a grade 3 paper, even though grade 2 was his normal contrast paper.

Somebody on Antiques Roadshow a couple of weeks ago had 3 AA's they picked up at a garage sale for less than $5; value was estimated at $10-15k each. One thing the appraiser commented on, is that prints he did himself, he put his full name on; prints he supervised and approved (but did not do himself), he only put his initials on.
