Have been playing around with design of my website and here it is: Landscape Black and White Prints. It's inspired by the Wordpress Hemingway reloaded theme. Well actually its downright plagiarised but I'll put a credit in shortly. (N.B. the theme is a free download for anyone wanting to use it in Wordpress). Mind you its totally rebuilt from the ground up so I can't be accused of swiping code and the design is so basic that you can barely call it design. i.e. top half of screen one colour and bottom half another. That's it!

one day I'll actually get it finished properly.

How's it work for you? Look at archives if you want images but there's not a lot in there yet and nothing new since last time.

I'll apologise to 800x600 users now. You will find it doesn't work very well for you.

Your link does not work - I think there is a comma where a period should be (after www)

I Like the site. It shows your work well, and the background colour is particularly attractive.

Do I guess correctly that that the text in the "galleries" area belongs elsewhere?

Matt

yes you do. I'm just trying to get the design done in such a way that I at least have a chance of getting some hits on it when I put proper content in there.

And people with higher res screens now get a lot more visible info on screen with less scrolling. Especially thumbnails which are bigger and more to a page..

I am in the process of designing a website for Laura and my own work.
I only hope it can be as nice as your site.
As well your printing skills are wonderful.
The site is very clean and easy to navigate with enough information easily at hand to look at.

Nope, not yet, the text is too light to read on my Sony Vaio notebook. When people get older they tend to need text a little darker and a little larger.
Why not put your name in Script, it would be very classy. The photo titles are too light to read also.

produced using Black and White film, Fibre Based Silver Gelatin Paper, traditional darkroom craft techniques and a little artistic license added for good measure. Analogue equipment is used throughout except for lightmeters and timers. Even my main cameras are fully manual.

Finished Prints are archivally processed and mounted. This means that a rigid regime of fixing using a two bath process, hypo clearing, washing, toning, usually in Selenium, more hypo clearing and extended washing times to eliminate the maximum possible amounts of residual chemicals from the development, fixing and toning processes.

The Silver in Black and White printing paper is prone to attack from airborne pollutants and natural tarnishing(oxidation) over long periods of time. Selenium toning converts the Silver(Ag) into Silver Selenide which is a far more stable compound than untoned Silver. This can increase the archival properties of Silver Gelatin prints providing the toning is taken to completion. If you have any Silverware in your home you will know how easily it tarnishes. Fortunately, because the image Silver is in suspension within the gelatin layer, it is protected to a large extent from rapid natural tarnishing.

I own 60 year old black and white family photographs which are still in perfect condition and were not toned in Selenium. From this you can gather that Selenium or other archival toning is not absolutely necessary but it will protect and increase the life of a print. Toning also has other benefits such as increased contrast range in the print. This effect is mostly achieved by darkening the blacks a little and often creates a tonally richer appearance to a print. Toning can, and often does, change the colour of print. The colour it gives is dependant on many factors. See my Subjective Toning page for more on this.

All prints are dry mounted onto acid free conservation quality mountboard using using Fusion 4000 dry mount adhesive sheet which is also acid free and makes a very permanent bond between print and mountboard. Should you require prints not to be dry mounted then please ask.

This text is too light. When text is too light it draws undue attention to it as if the author is trying too hard to make a point.

i especially like how if you click on an image,
you can see how it will look matted + framed !
