Another new website

Hey gang,

I just launched my first website. It's far from complete, but
a decent start.

My big problem now is screen size.

I developed it in Dreamweaver. Like most newbie's I relied
on defaults for a lot of the setup.

Unfortunately this meant that the site is set up for a high
resolution, large monitor for viewing.

Now I find that people with basic 800x600 screens are having
to do the dreaded "horizontal scroll".

Does anyone know how, in dreamweaver, to batch the whole
site and resize to 800x600?

Any other comments will be appreicated - this size thing is
just my current sticking point.

I wouldn't woory about designing for 600 pixels wide. That's awfuuly small in 2006.

800 pixels wide is the standard.

Terry in your html change your table width to 800 (I like 756 to make sure there is room for a scroll bar). Then remove all of the width attributes in the first three <td> tags of your table. Then it should shrink down. You may have to delete all of the width attributes in other <td> tags on your page.

Terry, the final call is up to you on what size to use. There is no real standard. You will find that it is mostly older monitors (which won't show the colors properly anyway) or uses from 3rd world countries using those low resolutions.

Derek is right about setting the width to 756 if you do decide to downsize it to 800x600.

Sorry Terry, can't help with the website. Just wanted to tell you that "Frozen Waterfall, CT 1975" is one of the most beautifully composed images I've seen in a long time. Perfect balance, perfect edges & perfect corners

Thanks for the suggestions, and the positive comment
on the frozen falls.

Looking at that image reminds me why I moved to California...

I think that I've kind of figured out the problem with
the lower res monitors.

The full size images on my pages are +- 580 pixels wide.
Even if the side columns in my overall table shrink with
autostretch - the large images hold the whole thing
open.

I haven't found anywhere that suggests that the images
can be made to resize smaller for lower res. screens.

So, I guess it's pretty well stuck where it is for now. Dreamweaver
doesn't seem to have any sort of global command to deal with it.

That is well beyond what you can do with basic HTML. Personally, I don't see it as a problem. The audience you are probably looking to attract, is more likely to have higher resolution monitors anyway.
