Well I'm doing this a little out of order. I found out about APUG when someone on the Olympus mailing list asked if any other members were going to the conference. So I joined APUG but didn't have much time to look around then registered for the conference.

The conference was a great time and I met a lot of really nice people so it's pushed me to become a little more active on APUG.

For details, I'm 29 and live in Halifax. I have a BA in Russian Studies but I work in IT.

I've been interested in photography since I was a teenager. I had the chance to take a class in grade 11 and 12 that included some B&W photo (including darkroom work). Things really took off a few years later when I replaced my unreliable old Praktica cameras with a new Canon Elan IIe with the naive idea of "going pro". I spent a study term in St. Petersburg, Russia and shot a few rolls of slide and B&W.

When I finished my degree I began taking some photo courses to improve my skills. I started with a course at the local community college and later discovered the continuing education courses offered by the local art college. I also became unsatisfied with the bulk and weight of my Canon body and switched to old Olympus OM-1n bodies instead. I also have a Mamiya M645 and Arca-Swiss 4x5 that I shoot with far less frequently than I should.

Lately I've been feeling like I'm at a plateau where I'm questioning what I want to get out of photography and looking for creative direction. I also really need to increase my volume of shooting, which I think will help with this process.

Wow, that turned out a lot longer than I initially had planned and there's still more to tell but I think I'll leave it at that for now.

Welcome Andrew from Hawaii. I hope you enjoy our community.

Hi Robert, we met briefly at the show opening at the conference. I was one of the fellow "couch sitters".

Andrew, welcome from a fellow Bluenoser, and Mamiya 645 user. Maybe we'll soon have enough Maritime APUG members for an outing.

A maritime outing could be fun. Unfortunately, I don't tend to get much use out of my 645 but I'm trying to increase my shooting volume so that could change.

Welcome Andrew. I think we met at the conference - my wife and I might have given you a ride to the hotel if that jogs your memory.

What you mean you can't tell from my avatar picture?

It's highly likely that you did give me a ride to the hotel since I was bumming rides every day. Were you in any of the workshops? I was in cross-processing, intro to LF, AZO and Les' portfolio review.

Okay, that's who I thought you were but I wanted to make sure. Thanks again for the lift and also for holding on to my prints from Mr. Callow.

Andrew!!!!!! I don't visit APUG as often as I frequent RFF, but it's good to see you here. (Note to others: I know Andrew from the OM list.)

I decided not to go to the APUG conference for a few reasons, but I do regret not having been there just for the experience of meeting folks I've known from a variety of forums.

So, Andrew, were you able to hook up with Bill Barber at the conference.

Welcome... so very good to see you here.

Hey Earl, I remember you talking about hitting the conference, too bad that you couldn't make it.

Bill was the one who first introduced me to APUG with his post on the OM list about signing up for the conference. At that time the workshop schedule wasn't up yet and there were a lot of things I wanted to take (but was concerned about cost if I took them all) so I just filed it away in the back of my mind. Later, once the schedule was up it helped me narrow down my selections based on what conflicted. Fortunately, I registered before I found out that Bill wouldn't be able to make it or else that might've talked me out of going. As it was, I decided to go anyway and am really glad that I did. It was a little bit odd though since I had registered on APUG when I signed up for the conference but hadn't browsed it much or posted anything before attending so that was really my first introduction to this community.

Andrew: Glad you made it, but I'm sorry Bill couldn't. Also, Gene Wilburn couldn't make it even though he lives in Port Credit. He had a mild heart attack (in Feb, I believe); he's doing fine now, but wasn't up to the busy schedule of the conference. I'll see him later in June when a bunch of us RFFers get together.
