Well I'm doing this a little out of order. I found out about APUG when someone on the Olympus mailing list asked if any other members were going to the conference. So I joined APUG but didn't have much time to look around then registered for the conference.
The conference was a great time and I met a lot of really nice people so it's pushed me to become a little more active on APUG.
For details, I'm 29 and live in Halifax. I have a BA in Russian Studies but I work in IT.
I've been interested in photography since I was a teenager. I had the chance to take a class in grade 11 and 12 that included some B&W photo (including darkroom work). Things really took off a few years later when I replaced my unreliable old Praktica cameras with a new Canon Elan IIe with the naive idea of "going pro". I spent a study term in St. Petersburg, Russia and shot a few rolls of slide and B&W.
When I finished my degree I began taking some photo courses to improve my skills. I started with a course at the local community college and later discovered the continuing education courses offered by the local art college. I also became unsatisfied with the bulk and weight of my Canon body and switched to old Olympus OM-1n bodies instead. I also have a Mamiya M645 and Arca-Swiss 4x5 that I shoot with far less frequently than I should.
Lately I've been feeling like I'm at a plateau where I'm questioning what I want to get out of photography and looking for creative direction. I also really need to increase my volume of shooting, which I think will help with this process.
Wow, that turned out a lot longer than I initially had planned and there's still more to tell but I think I'll leave it at that for now.
