Analoge Boy in a Digital World

I grew up as a teenager in the 1980's. I was not exactly rich (to the say the least) and my photography was limited to whatever cameras I could get. That's why I have so many 16mm 110 photos! Developing was a problem too. I was lucky that my family used to build stockpiles of film waiting to be developed and so I used to sneak my film into other peoples 'waiting to be developed' piles! like a magpie if you like!


I used to dream of owning an SLR. It was totally out of the question. Oh, how much I wanted an SLR and those lenses. It was a different world.


Nowadays I can buy all of my childhood fantasy equipment online for next to nothing because the world has moved on and no longer wants a camera which is not connected to a phone or has wifi or can shoot HD video and record dolby stereo sound and can publish your photos in nano seconds. Did I mention digital editing?

But I know better. Anyway, I can always digitalize my photos and hey presto I can enter that digital world (if I wish).

Many thanks for your warm welcome. I am into cine film in a very big way. It was mainstream and now there is so much equipment out there that very few people want or even know what it is. I also like to buy other people's home movies (8mm or super8). Is that crazy? I like to buy them if they are complete i.e. not been split for sale so that I get a complete family documentary. For me, it is like preserving a slice of history so that people in years to come can see what growing up in the 50's, 60's and 70's was like.

My still cameras are a Canon EOS 300 and a Konstructor camera that I built with my girlfriend last year.

People who used to be into film often gift me their unused (35mm) film stock (normally years out of date) - so that is what I use. I have not used fresh film for ages. I also like to process C41 in my kitchen but not always. There is a nearby supermarket that processes film very cheaply so that often gets my custom.

I am about to commence processing my cine films. Starting with Tri-x but I intend to process Vision 3 too. I have not sourced the raw chemicals for vision 3 but I am ready 'to go' with my reversal film stock.

S-8 family films...
What I come across at fleamarkets typically are movies of family-travels or -celebrations. I find none of them interesting enough to pay extra for reels. (I have paid though for archive-cassettes containing film.)
Maybe though there is something out I'd miss. Anyway, there is the legal situatian in Germany that prohibits public showing in case I found something interesting.

Welcome to APUG from Michigan. I know how you feel. We just returned from two and a half weeks in Japan. My Wife and I shot 27 36 exp. rolls of Kodak 400 color. (I generally use color for travel as colors are so important). I look at all the film cameras I have collected over the years and love them all. Wish I could use them all. They range from Minox to 6X9 Mamiyas, with everything in between. Keep up your film interest - you have friends here.

I also collect old familyfilms. I gave a few of them to the local audiovisual archive. They are very interested in these types of film for historical reasons.
They store the films properly, digitize them and put them on their website.
