hello
I am looking to buy Amidol ( english) as they say. . .. . . . .

Artcraft - on there web site says ( out of stock)

Photographers Formulary ( IDK if they carry the chinese version or not)

any other suggestions to purchase, in the US, CANADA, or EU Amidol

thank you

in advance

There is a shop in Cairo that specializes in the sale of chemical raw materials. It has a half-kilo airtight glass container, made in English, and he had offered it to me to buy for 9,000 Egyptian pounds, and there is a possibility to negotiate this price.

I was actually excited to buy it, and I asked a question here in the forum about the feasibility of buying that quantity, and I was told that it will not help you much as long as you are not interested in analog printing at all.
I tried a lot to inquire about this matter and asked another question about what formulas can be used in developing black and white films, and we searched a lot in this matter and did not find any concentrated formula based on this element similar to the formula (Kalogen), ,
And when I found that there was no hope in this matter, I told the seller that I was not enthusiastic about this deal.

Sigma will not sell to individuals. You have to buy from a retailer. I ordered DTPA and a few other one-off, hard to source items from Alphachem in Canada, but a “custom” order like this is expensive. Probably not a viable option under the vast majority of circumstances.

I think talking directly with Artcraft is a better place to start. I’ve always found them helpful and responsive.

In retrospect I'm not surprised that Sigma-Aldrich doesn't sell directly to individuals. Should have clarified this with you first before getting people's hopes up about an additional source for Amidol.

Many years ago there was a business in Berkeley California called Bryant Labs. They would sell to individuals and could get things like Amidol or glycin or pyrogallic acid. This was before there was Photographer's Formulary or Artcraft. AFAIK they've been gone for awhile.

What's the matter with the Chinese product?

I have never used amidol but I think the consensus was .. it was contaminated with nickel during manufacture.

It tends to yellow prints requiring extra washing. Some filtered the mixed developer before use. It’s never been a big problem for me. I wash with a submersible aquarium pump in a big tray and the color comes out after a good wash.

Sigma-Aldrich shows they can ship around September 27: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/US/en/...ge=30&sort=relevance&term=Amidol&type=product
100 gm is $142.

I haven't dealt with Sigma-Aldrich myself but michael_r recently got some DTPA from them, see the D-76/ID-11 thread here.

Sigma and it's associated companies are the worst in the business. They lobby to keep chemicals out of the reach of small business and individuals, while continually making it harder and harder to get a business account.

My advice for sourcing chemicals like this is to contact a chemical supply company on Alibaba. Tell them you need 2,4-Diaminophenol and they will likely be able to ship it to you for the cost of shipping + a few dollars.

I wouldn't worry about chinese chemical supplies, they are very good at what they do, especially if they anticipate you will be a repeat customer.

Tried that. Was surprisingly difficult. You'd have to bark up a forest of trees to get a usable response.

It's hard to navigate between the increasing pressures of legislation and market forces that favor those companies that can ignore or evade legislation (i.e. the ones from China). I can't blame these companies for it.

How would he verify quality and purity ? That is often times an issue when buying chemistry.

I had some Chinese Amidol about ten years ago. It was a black course looking powder, which struck me as weird. After mixing up the developer, I had to filter it a couple times with coffee filters to get all the crud out. The prints were stained yellow, but cleared after a lengthy soak in water. The print tones looks lovely, but in the end wasn't worth the hassle. Went right back to Ilford MG developer. Oh ya, and I used tongs as I didn't want black fingernails :D

If you wanted to be fancy you could get an NMR done or ATR-IR. Ask the supplier for one of those spectra. If they deliver you a subpar product, tell them it's unacceptable quality and ask if they have higher purity samples.

That legislation comes from Sigma and Merck's lobbying. Those two have spent the last decade buying up all of the chemical suppliers to ensure their own monopoly and legislating insane requirements to slam the door behind them. Sorry but I can blame sigma when they're selling low grade DCM for $200 a bottle.
