Does anybody know where is possible to buy either Amidol developer or pure Amidol in EU? It seems that Wolfgang Moersch has ceased production of his Amidol developer. I can buy Amidol from company dealing with chemicals in my hometown but I have to wait for 2-3weeks (it's not an issue) and it's dirty expensive - 100g/100€ + 20%VAT (it's a serious issue..)

Thank you, I know about Photographers Formulary. None of the stores selling their products do not sell hazardous materials overseas. That's why I'm looking for Amidol in EU...

Sorry ,try amidol developer-for sale in europe.Or try -www.temnakomora.cz and ask members.
Something is in wienna austria.

Another source in EU is Silverprint in London - Google Silverprint Amidol

Still not cheap - 85249
AMIDOL 25g
£19.36
£23.23 (inc 20% VAT)

Thank you all.
Ebay could be a source.
Silverprint is the same story as USA. They do not ship chemicals outside UK. I drove to UK twice to pick up my Ebay victory-Devere 504 and to take part on Les McLean's darkroom workshop 3-4 years ago. I stopped at Silverprint and loaded the car with the stuff they do not ship overseas including archival washers.....and got the fine for wrong parking...
:D

The Amidol sold by Silverprint is chinese. Both batches I bought stained my prints pink and nothing would get rid of it. I had a conversation with Artcraft Chemicals in the US and (surprisingly I thought) they agreed to ship to the UK. I would assume that they would also ship to the EU. Couldn't do any harm to drop them a line.

Once again, many thanks for replies.
I just got the answer from Ebayer selling Amidol. It's more than ten years old. It seems that £50.00 for 100g of such old Amidol is too much. I'm afraid it won't work....

There are references on the web to people using Amidol that was originally bottled in 1906 (Brett Weston) - also references to staining from modern chinese Amidol which might be related to the prescence of small amounts of PPD, which is not a problem for its main use in hair dye. But as you say the e-bay purchase may be a gamble.

Last year, I've had no problems buying Amidol from Photographer's Formulary, shipped to Ireland, which is still in EU.

Edit: oops. I see they stopped doing that, according to the web site, at least... Things never stay the same, I suppose. Still, you can get their Amidol developer for paper, which does not seem to have any shipping restrictions. There would be some unmixed Amidol in it.

Get hold of Michael Smith. He will ship to Europe. Dead Link Removed His is Chinese amidol, which is great developer if you use it properly. Complaints about excessive staining or turning the prints pink are the results of either user error or use of the wrong paper. Chinese amidol will not turn Azo, Lodima or Ilford Mutligrade papers pink if you use a sodium thiosulfate fixer. You will need potassium bromide, sodium sulfite and citric acid to make a working solution for developing prints. You will also need plain hypo and sodium bisulfite to use as fixer. I don't know about Michael's price, but amidol is expensive. I'm used to paying $200/lb. (454 grams) to Artcraft.
Michael's formulae are here: http://michaelandpaula.com/mp/Azo_Formulas.html

Dear all,
I just would like to let you know, that 250g of Amidol as well as Phenidone (much cheaper that in my hometown) and some other stuff is on the way to me from Polish company Keten chemicals. We made a deal on Friday midnight!!! According to Lukasz from Keten Amidol isn't Chinese... I'll try it with Efke Emaks and Fomabrom during the next couple of weeks...

Last year I bought various chemicals that I needed to make up my two-bath developer.

I sent them an e-mail asking if they had the particular chemicals in stock and in the sizes I require.

Two days later they all arrived in the post with an invoice.

Definitely worth contacting them and supporting a lifeline for analogue workers.

Best,

David

Their price (505 zl. / 250 grams) works out to about $265/lb. if you're converting the zloty at $0.29. Not bad. How's the quality?
Quality is quite good. It is chinese amidol and leave some dust in solution that don't create problems to the prints. If don't like to work with a dirty solution it can be easily filtred, but I don't care and prints are clean and without stains.

Oh. If it's Chinese, then maybe the price isn't so great. I paid about $65/lb. for it in the original deal.
