I have been given a load of ambicofilters with adapters but non will fit my standard 58mm lenses does anyone know anything about this USA brand and if I can even get the circle adapter eBay UK has turned up little there are neutral density filters, different colours about 10 in total seems a shame not to make use of them thanks

Of all filters I grabbed out of rummage boxes etc. I did not came across bad ones, except for some polarizers that were delamiating and a shitty designed haze filter from Cokin.
Thus I would not worry about the quality of your filters.

Here even my local camera shop has adapter rings to make filters fit a lens' filter thread.
Otherwise they are still made by Heliopan in Germany. And likely in China too.

This joint seems to a variety. Don't know if they ship international though.
I'd drop them a line to see which variety you need(obviously filter size) and
adapter to mount the filter to the ring.
FWIW Cokin only had two sizes. Maybe Ambico's the same.
