All Kodak film gone from Walmart

I don't get to Walmart all that often, but stopped by yesterday to get some Kodak Gold 200. None there. They had a big rack of Fuji film, so I bought some 400, but what happened? Anyone know?

If I was going to speculate, which I am, is it possible Fuji has "dumped" their C-41 film to Walmart in preparation for total discontinuation?

I would speculate that Walmart got a better price from Fuji than from Kodak.

I would speculate that Fuji paid more for shelf space than Kodak, or offered Walmart a better mark-up

I notice that Wal-Mart where I live still have Kodak BW400CN three pack.

A friend of mine went to buy some 400CN, and was told that Wal-mart was going to stop stocking Kodak film by the film clerk. Now, they said this was because Kodak was going to stop making film, so there was obviously some misinformation going around, but it wouldn't surprise me if Wal-mart decided to only stock Fuji.

Wal-Mart, after many years of devotion to Kodachrome, Super-XX, TXP/220, Polymax Fine Art, the Dye Transfer process, Kodak Desensitizer for development by inspection, and Kodak Abrasive Reducer finally decided they were fed up with the unending discontinuation of much beloved products, and abandoned Kodak in a huff. They are now stocking color film from Fuji and will soon be introducing the full line of Ilford, Efke, and Foma films, papers, and chemicals in their new darkroom section.

Heheh--I found one of the last boxes of 20x24 Azo stashed under a pile of cheap nylon lingerie.

I went to W-mart web site and did search for Kodak and Fujifilm, and in fact, "Kodak" turns up only digital products, no film. "fujifilm" returns a few 35mm items, and some Instax items. And you don't want to know what turns up if you search for "Azo." Seriously.

Sad, but true.

I work at a Walmart photo lab. The word is that Kodak has plans to end consumer side film over the next year or two only selling one time use cameras. Because of this, Walmart decided to get ahead of the curve because Kodak could make a commitment on what films would be available for the 2010 or 2011 mods. We just set the spring film 2010 mod and spring 2011 is being planed already. Kodak had already lost the Picture Maker contract to HP.:rolleyes:

WalMart, only sells the film it can process in its film and print processors.

Film sales were a necessary evil, to get customers for print processing.

Soon WalMart will only process digital.

I'm a bit surprised at the several snobbish responses.

"Walmart? Who cares? It's for losers."

The decline in film availability has left mom and pop casual shooters with no place to buy film. That of course doesn't matter to us, because we order our film online. Our supply is not in jeopardy...

That's not reality. There are far more moms and dads shooting film that have no interest in digital than there are APUG members. These casual shooters keep film alive, not us. If Walmart stops selling film it's only a matter of time before film sales stop everywhere.

It makes sense to me that Walmart would go exclusive with Fuji as Fuji has for years provided them with special film cartridges marked "Return to Walmart for Processing." All their send-out service processing goes to Fuji already.

In store processing - in my observation - is likely to be phased out on a regional basis depending on how much volume they're running at a particular location. My Walmart in Victoria, TX still runs film, my Sam's Club does only send out. I was in a Katy (West Houston) Walmart and Sam's two weeks ago and the opposite was the case - Sam's did film, Walmart didn't. The clerk in the Sam's said that they would be running film there through the end of 2010 but he didn't know about 2011.

My local Walmarts in Dallas phased out in-store processing, but luckily the Targets I go to still do 35mm (cheaply too).
