All I want are two 8x10 film holders

But I keep getting sniped on ebay, or they go for huge prices. I don't get it. Is the demand for these items really that high or are folks just willing to pay more? I had a bid in on two used holders that, when all was said and done, went for $170.00US.

Try looking for older wooden 8x10 holders. They usually go for less than the more modern plastic ones and are lighter as well.

Mark-do as the above poster mentioned and you will be a happy boy. I have accumulated about 30 of the woodwn holders bought in lots of 5 to 7 and never paid more than about $12 each. Not only lighter but repairable too!

$170.00!! Yikes, the last set I bought was 4 nice fidelity wood holders with slides, all I had to do is retape them and I paid $37.00 for all 4 of them, $170 for 2 used holders is out there...

I know what you mean. I've just about sworn off ebay for that reason. I've been trying to get a 6x4.5 Beseler negative carrier and the same thing happens. On two different occasions a used (and quite ill treated) carrier went for close to the price of a brand new one. You've got some good advice in the previous posts though. I would ask in the classified ads here as well. Many times the generosity of members on this site has provided people with an item they were looking for at a fair price.

Patience is a key element to ebay. I got a new in box 6x7 carrier for 30$ with 'buy it now'. Sometimes you spend more by trying to spend less. Don't buy stuff there if you need it right now.

Lens and Repro has used 8x10 holders listed for $10-50

Or keep waiting for something to fall through the cracks on ebay. I've picked up the older wooden holders for under $10 and the newer plastic holders for under @$20 each on ebay. You just have to wait until the feeding frenzy slows down for a while.

I think the above post is correct. Patience is the key when shopping ebay. When I needed my (8x10) film holders, which I actually just finished supplying myself with, I bookmarked several of what I needed. I've lucked out with my auction purchases! I figure they (film holders) are in the seventy something dollar range new, so my goal (and this is for me only since most of my ebay purchases have no sales tax involved with fairly low shipping rates) is usually not to go over a half way point in pricing on anything used. Sort of a 'two for the price of one' deal.

Another comment that was made that if you need it right now, ebay is not the place to shop...I agree! JandC has the best prices on 'new' film holders. I personally have no wooden film holders. Shop it and see what works best for you. Good luck!!

The secret is definitely patience and the willingness to sacrifice. You can sacrifice your money or sacrifice your time, whichever. I waited and meanwhile actively turned over every stone in my area, eventually picking up 4 older Eastko 8x10s for $1.25 each in a thrift/antique store. I had to redesign two to make them functional. They are easily worth $200 each to me, now. LOL! I had more time than money, obvoiusly. Yes, I think the average price on ebay is now close to $75-$100 each for "new and like new". That really sucks when you think about it. Supply and demand at work. Go figure.

You might give Calumet in Chicago a call: 312-440-4920. They often have used holders at reasonable prices. I've picked up plastic 8x10 holders there for about $30.00 each in very nice condition.

Try Chuck Rubin in Louisville, Ky. The last time I was in his shop he had piles of them tagged at $25.00 apiece. He'll ship to you and he takes PayPal.

Midwest Photo can fix you up with a couple of used woodies at a reasonable price. Talk with Jim. If you get a 'leaker' you can exchange it, which is a better deal than you'll get on the 'Bay.

Yesterday a guy posted 4 holders (you really need more than just 2!) for a Buy It Now of $75 but it was gone by the time I clicked on the button... I have purchased them for an average of $35 or so for newer plastic ones.

I managed to get these four plastic fidelity for only 49.99$, they have had a hard life and it shows.. But they are light tight and working!! I did find them by extending my search to 8 x 10, and not just 8x10. So it is possible to get lucky, if you look around and WAIT

I am a plenty patient man. Took me three years to get all of the parts I needed to rebuild my 5x7. I havebeen doing this for quite a while and looking for the wooden ones. But have extended my search to plastic. It is not a need now, it is just a need some time. I guess I am getting frustrated.

SO, it seems these are a hot ticket item on e-bay. I will contact the people listed thanks.

It's crazy because I had two brand new, never been used Lisco holders for a buy it now price of $140 up for two weeks recently, but nobody touched them. They are going for almost 90 bucks a piece in the stores. I can never figure ebay out.
