Alan Ross, a wonderful photographer, and I am honoured to say also my good friend, will teach a unique workshop at Yosemite NP this October 9–13, 2018. It is called "In the Style of Ansel Adams: Crafting the Fine Silver Image" for three reasons. First of all, it will take place in Ansel Adams's former darkroom and it will include extensive demonstrations using your negatives on one of Ansel's original enlargers. Secondly, Alan has been Ansel's second-only assistant, he knows his style well, as he has been entrusted to keep printing Ansel Adams Special Editions by the man himself.

The third reason, however, is that Alan has continued to develop the silver printing technique, keeping true to the vision, but modernising the processes to suit today's changed circumstances—often relaxing formerly strict approaches thanks to newer materials and better understanding. For example, Alan is known for having established an approach to selective masking that is pretty easy to use requiring little special equipment. I had the pleasure of seeing Alan teach it many times over the years, everyone is always impressed by the results. While there are no magic bullets in our craft, seeing how Alan pulls all the little things together, just using the barest, simplest tools, like a metronome instead of a timer, is always amazing. I get a thrill every time I see him create an expressive photograph with what seems like very little effort—but plenty of experience, to be sure.

I have no financial interest in promoting this workshop. I just thought that an opportunity like this one does not arise often and APUGers/PHOTRIOers would like to know about it—it has been a long time since a film-only, silver-gelatin workshop took place in that famous darkroom.

I will be there, so feel free to ask questions which I would be happy to relay to Alan if I could not answer directly. At this moment there are only 4 spaces left, so book soon, as the workshop is limited to just 10 lucky people.

When I finished grad school several coworkers set up a class in Yosemite taught by Ansel Adams. I had just upgraded my Minolta to an SRT101 and bought a 21mm, 28mm, 58mm, and a 70mm to 205mm zoom lenses. I was and had been shooting slide for over ten years. I felt that each slide was a finished photograph unless I remounted it to crop. I knew that the Zone System was for sheet film and did not work well for 35mm film, especially for 36 exposure rolls. I felt that I was never going to print photographs in a darkroom. [Next time I used a darkroom would be 30 years later.] I was so damn smart then that I choose not to join my coworkers in the class.

My first experience in an AA Yosemite workshop was in 1966, as a 35mm color slide shooter; it opened my eyes to a new world and three more workshops followed until 1971. The last one occurred in AA's darkroom; participants were asked to bring any challenging negatives. I learned a great deal working alongside the MAN and was then totally committed to sheet film b&w. I've had two of his original prints (purchased at those workshops) hanging in my home as daily examples of print quality to strive for. I've had guests come in and exclaim, "Wow! This looks like Ansel Adams" and when I tell them that two of them are his, it makes my day when I'm asked "Really? Which ones are his?" It reaffirms that I'm coming close. This is NOT all about me, folks. It's simply to convey the value of Alan's offer. He's certainly someone who is qualified to teach the subject and needs to be listened to.

Alan often says that he is a “zone system heretic”, which he makes simple and dogma-free. For those of us who have worked with it over the years, even dabbled in sensitometry etc (plenty here on Photrio), it is then a great experience to depart from any book rules, internalise it, make it your second nature, and then treat it as another tool, and not a goal or gospel. I have seen Alan “free” many photographers from the stricture of the zone system and let them use it well, intuitively. So you have not missed out anything at all.

Thank you, @silveror0, I will pass to Alan, I am sure he will enjoy your comment!

Alan and I are probably of one mind on the Zone System.

I’ve a correction to add to my original post, which might matter to @Sirius Glass. Alan tells me that the enlarger in Ansel’s Yosemite darkroom is no longer Ansel’s. It has been replaced with an Omega LPL, and that is what Alan will use for printing. Apologies for misleading you, the fault is mine—I had my wires crossed, I suppose...

Nonetheless, I am 100% sure it will be a wonderful workshop for anyone attending, having seen Alan teach on many occassions, always amazing his students.

PS. 3 spaces left as of yesterday evening.

Since I will not be able to use any enlarger at the facility, it does not matter which enlargers that they have there.

Quick update on the workshop: as of today there are 2 spaces (out of 10) left and the unused accommodation at Yosemite Lodge that is being held for the attendees will be released on 31 August.

If you are not on FB (I am not) you might have missed Alan's short post there, which he has shared with me by email. He wrote:

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: As I gear up for my all film workshop in Yosemite this coming October (a few spots left and the smoke will have cleared…don’t miss out!), it takes me back to the days of Ansel’s June workshops in Yosemite. In those days, the workshops included as many as 8 instructors, including Ansel, and about sixty students. The instructors ranged from Carmel fixtures such as Al Weber and Morely Baer, to artists such as Dorr Bothwell and Ralph Putzker, and other photo luminaries such as Yosuf Karsh, Arnold Newman, Ralph Gibson, Judy Dater, Imogen Cunningham, Ruth Bernhard and Mary Ellen Mark. We broke the students down into smaller groups and rotated them throughout the week so that everyone had a chance to work with each instructor. There were late night photo philosophy chit chats, (and probably more than a few glasses of whatever consumed), and nightly processing of film. A lot of this would be impractical with today’s fast-paced lifestyle, but sometimes a guy can wish…those WERE the days! Here’s a snap of me and Ansel and Ansel teaching from one of those June workshops that surfaced recently while working on a video project, and the color one from Ansel's last Yosemite Workshop in 1981. Enjoy! To snag one of the last spots in this October’s workshop, click here:

This workshop is well worth the time and costs. Every day I learned many new methods of getting better results using traditional printing. Also kudos for Alan Ross' modified Zone Systems. Spouses and OS's were included in evening activities and welcome on the field trips. I recommend that people regularly Alan's website for future workshops.

I'll chip in $100...
I don't think you learned enough, you need to do it again so we can Hassy-commiserate, LOL!

Sure, hey to minimize the hassle for you just send the $100 directly to me lol. Our Canadian peso sucks right now so paying 30% more for anything in USD just hurts. It's the Scottish Taurus in me.

I can just see it now, fast forward to 10/2019....Alan comes up with a box in his hands and says "Hey Dan, you have a package from Canada." I open it and inflate what is a sharpie-bearded blow up doll wearing a broken Weston meter and a t-shirt that says "Eric Rose Stunt Double"....:D
