Alan Ross, a wonderful photographer, and I am honoured to say also my good friend, will teach a unique workshop at Yosemite NP this October 9–13, 2018. It is called "In the Style of Ansel Adams: Crafting the Fine Silver Image" for three reasons. First of all, it will take place in Ansel Adams's former darkroom and it will include extensive demonstrations using your negatives on one of Ansel's original enlargers. Secondly, Alan has been Ansel's second-only assistant, he knows his style well, as he has been entrusted to keep printing Ansel Adams Special Editions by the man himself.
The third reason, however, is that Alan has continued to develop the silver printing technique, keeping true to the vision, but modernising the processes to suit today's changed circumstances—often relaxing formerly strict approaches thanks to newer materials and better understanding. For example, Alan is known for having established an approach to selective masking that is pretty easy to use requiring little special equipment. I had the pleasure of seeing Alan teach it many times over the years, everyone is always impressed by the results. While there are no magic bullets in our craft, seeing how Alan pulls all the little things together, just using the barest, simplest tools, like a metronome instead of a timer, is always amazing. I get a thrill every time I see him create an expressive photograph with what seems like very little effort—but plenty of experience, to be sure.
I have no financial interest in promoting this workshop. I just thought that an opportunity like this one does not arise often and APUGers/PHOTRIOers would like to know about it—it has been a long time since a film-only, silver-gelatin workshop took place in that famous darkroom.
I will be there, so feel free to ask questions which I would be happy to relay to Alan if I could not answer directly. At this moment there are only 4 spaces left, so book soon, as the workshop is limited to just 10 lucky people.
