Hello Everyone, hopefully someone with some local knowledge could help me out a little bit here. I'm staying in Opelika Alabama for the next few days, until Friday morning to be exact, and am looking for some areas to shoot photographs in. I'm looking for some out of the way, rural areas, that seem to still have a lot of remains of their past. I'm not exactly sure what I want, so I can't be too specific, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks so much in advance.

If Selma isn't too far, consider the graveyard there, and some of the ante bellum houses.

It is a pleasant surprise that Roger in Northern Aquitaine should point you to Selma's cemetary and old houses, but he is right. A good place to see a lot in a short time. I live about 50 miles to the east in Montgomery.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I'll have to wait and go there next time. I ended up going to Birmingham, which was different than what I had been hoping to do but interesting none the less. I visited the Sloss Furnaces, which was a great place to explore, spent the entire day there. If anyone else is in the area any time soon I can't recommend it enough. Thanks again

Is that the old Confederate ironworks? I was going to recommend them too, but couldn't remember the name or location -- I've not been there in 15 years or so.

No, Roger. There are two Confederate ironworks nearby. Tannehill is a few miles to the West, toward Tuscaloosa, and Brierfield is South of Montevallo. Of the two, Tannehill is more relevant having been reconstructed. Sloss was of later vintage.

Since you're "on the scene" as they say, what is the status these days of "Vulcan"?

Last I remember from an article a few years ago in the NY Times is that he was quite derelict and might be torn down as a hazard.

That would be a real shame.

Vulcan is "alive and well" as they sometimes put it. Several years ago, with the generous help of federal, as well as state and local funds, Vulcan was taken down, then apart. The parts were taken to a metal working facility nearby and completely reworked. Meanwhile, the pedestal was stripped back to its original state (the old integrated elevator was removed). Then, a new elevator, attached to, but not incorporated as a part of the pedestal, was built. The statute was then reassembled and reinstalled on top. A new museum, was built nearby.
