I can’t find an F4 manual online. My understanding is that it should function with AI lenses in both M and A modes.

Mounting a 50 1.8 AI lens the lens mounts fine, but the meter won’t change shutter speeds as I change the lens aperture. I can see that the actual aperture is chosen properly when I fire the shutter. I also don’t see the aperture number on the little window inside the viewfinder on the top center.

When I mount an AI-S lens all is fine.

Thank you. That link didn’t load for me when I searched.

I raealized what the problem is - it’s a non-AI version of this lens 🫠

Thought that's what it would turn out to be: The lack of ADR (Aperture Direct Readout) numbers on the lens (normally visible in the display's little window) is a pretty good sign of a non-AI lens! You have to use stop-down metering with non-AI lenses (not forgetting to flip out the aperture tab on the body!).

The F4 will also focus motorized AF-S lenses which is remarkable foresight on their part.
Not really fast but it works.
