Agfa Portriga papers

Hello,

I realize the Agfa Portriga papers are not being made anymore but what modern paper has the same qualities as this particular paper?

Noone, really. If you want something that is not the same, but could be close, try Fomatone Classic... If you liked Portriga, Bergger Prestige Silver Supreme 100% cotton might please you too. They're not like Portriga, but they have optical and handling qualities that could be classified in the same category as the ones Portriga had...

George is right, unfortunately. There's really nothing out there quite like Portriga. The Warm-tones from Ilford and Forte/Bergger are not bad, however, and if you like the rich shadow detail of the chlorobromide emulsions, you might find them attractive. Portriga was in a class by itself. It was an especially fine paper for portraits.

Agfa Record Rapid and Portriga (same emulsion) were replaced by Agfa Classic MCC FB which is an excellent variable contrast paper and has quite similar properties.

The only paper I've found with comparable characteristics is Forte Polywarmtone, also sold as Bergger and Classic Arts (from Fotoimex, Berlin & J&C, US).

I still have a freezer will a large stock of Portriga Rapid, the pre 1988 emulsion. If you know Portriga than you know what that date means. In all the years following the early 1990's and trying to replace the paper I realized it was irreplacable. Similar papers are Bergger Warm tone and Ilford Multicontrast Warm tone. Fortezo warm tone was for a while but very inconsistent from batch to batch.

Try Pt./Pd. printing.

In a conversation I had a very long time ago with Dick Arentz he suggested that one of the main reasons he took up Pt./Pd. was because of the disappearance from the market of Agfa Portriga. I think he has also stated this in printing, though I can not find the source at this moment.

I agree that Portriga was unique. While I can't claim that Kentona is the same it has some similar characteristics and I like it.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I have bought the J&C Polywarmtone which is triple weight apparently for a try.

However, I would like to try platinum printing someday.
