I'm sure the book will look great, but there has been some discussion over on the LF forum about inherent problems with digital print-on-demand systems with some good information from participants in the printing industry. It may be that the book I get looks as good as the book you get, but will they look like each other?

More importantly for this project, I think, is that a commercial publisher can potentially do more to market the book and get it into more hands, so I think it's worth giving it a shot.

Hi David,

I am well aware of the drawbacks of print on demand. However, I have never seen something printed as such that looked as good as this.
It may be that the book I get looks as good as the book you get, but will they look like each other?
Why would this matter? Sam has put out a great product. That is what matters to me. Maybe the discussion of quality and print on demand is best discussed in one of those threads?

Maybe the consistency of the product doesn't matter to you, Bill, but it might to Sam. That's the only reason I mention it. More importantly, I think the book has a larger potential than as a print-on-demand publication, so I hope it realizes that potential.

My copy arrived today and as others have said, the production quality is excellent. It's the first I've seen a "print on demand" output and I'm quite favorably impressed.

These are sad but powerful scenes, I hope their circulation contributes to more action in the recovery/rebuilding effort.

Sam, My copy arrived yesterday. My wife and I stayed up and looked through it page by page. She got to the page with the beanie babies and could not go on. Powerful is an understatement.

Thank you for photographing, for sharing your story and for publishing this body of work.

Received my copies last week. Nicely done! Now I just have to decide which person gets the second copy.

My copy arrived this morning.

Sam, this is a truly outstanding body of work, better than anything I have yet seen. Thankyou for sharing with us your personal view of the disaster.

I just got the book by Sam this morning and I am very pleased.
I love the small format, the photographs feel very intimate. The printing is gorgeous and the whole design is very nice.
And of course, I don't need to say anything about the great photographs themselves.

The Katrina disaster has been one of the most important events of this new century (or even the one before) and if one wanted to keep a document of it, Sam's approach couldn't have been better. Its not a document of events, or of faces, its a record of the silent, souless things, that went through the disaster and they are now weeping and crying aloud.

I really lament that I lost the old New Orleans. I didn't have the chance to visit when I lived in the US. Blues, Mardi Gras and so many mysteries and interesting things to discover, if one city in the US had a soul, New Orleans would have been it.
I really hope it retains its character when its rebuild and not all its mystery places are gone.

I know I am a bit late to the party but I wanted to mention that I recieved Sam's book from LULU yesterday.

There is not alot that I can say that has not already been said, so forgive me for repeating others gestures.

It really is a wonderfull little book Sam. Very thought provoking. And hats off to LULU. It is beautifully presented and the images are exquisitely printed, detail in the lightest white and the darkest shadows, and lovely tones.

Well done and I hope your second book tells a happier story. I shall enjoy visiting this book on the shelf many times over.

Thank you

Regards
