Hi !
A friend of mine has got a lot of old D76 in tin cans.
The first box he opened up contained only a really brown and solidified powder so it went to the trash can.
Then he opened up a new box, this time the powder was white and free. So he mixed it.
But instead of starting with 800 cc water, add the powder and complete to one liter, as the instructions said, he started with 1l. So now the total volume is wrong at about 1,1l.
Questions :
What corrective action should he take for the miss mixing ?(please do not answer "dump it" )
Does the old D76 need a processing time correction ?
Thanks a lot for him !

Quite a lot of photographers already use D76 in a diluted form, meaning they add extra water to the stock solution in a ratio of 1:1 and extent development time (I was teached a 10.5 minutes development time for TRI-X 400 at this ratio). You will even see this option mentioned in the instructions on the D76 developer packages (6 3/4 of a min. for stock / full strength, and 9 3/4 min. for 1:1 on the package, TRI-X 400).
The nice thing about this is also that you can better control temperature. If the stock is slightly to warm, simple add cold tap water, or the other way around if it's to cold.

So a little bit of calculation should get you there... Just add extra water to achieve the 1:1 ratio and than use a development time in between 9 3/4 to 10.5 minutes.

Only mix the final 1:1 solution at the time you use it however, it won't store well at that dilution.

What are you developing? If it's roll film with the usual variations in exposure, I don't think the difference is worth worrying about. If you're developing sheet film where each sheet has to be developed to some precise level, it might be of a concern. I think in any of my processing, I wouldn't worry about it - or maybe give a few seconds more development.
