They were probably made in the same factory John, It's what's called "label engineering" It's so they can sell the product with the most prestigious name at a higher price.

Not forgetting that Samsung bough Rollei a few years ago, 1992, and are partly responsible for asset stripping the name :D

I didn't know that Ian, however I do remember stocking Fujica and Nikon video camcorders in my shop that were identical in every way, and the Nikon one was £100 more expensive.

The problem I've found with the P&S cameras was electronics going bad and the inability to take some abuse. My Pentax 928 went kaput after a couple of years or so and my Olympus Stylus has a bad meter. Not that all cameras of course have these problems but their not terribly strong, and now with the age of some of these P&S's, and maybe not knowing what they've been thru, you would have to wonder if their really worth the effort. I think that it would be in your best interest to find something that's built better, that is unless whatever it is is so dam cheap it doesn't matter. Perhaps a metal bodied fixed lens RF would be a thought?

I have a Stylus Epic. Great camera, the only thing that bothered me was the winding motor, not loud, but really noticeable. I bought a XA, which is pretty much the Stylus Epic, but a manual focus aperture priority version, with a even better lens. It's also silent. It goes in my pocket everywhere I go, and the Stylus Epic has been moved to my bag, where it survives wipeouts and crashes, and still manages to produce great shots. It is also a great party camera, all automatic. The advantage of the fast lens is, even if you shoot with flash at parties, the surrounding area will look relatively normally exposed.

That is not an option. This camera is meant to be a replacement for a Pentax IQ zoom (think it was the 928) that my wife had used for many years but lost last summer. She wants something no bigger or heavier, and preferably, smaller and lighter, and she definitely wants a zoom. I gotta stick with the program here.

I just picked up a Pentax IQ zoom for my daughter at a thrift shop for $4.00 with a case and manual. You might try looking in thrift shops for one yourself, I also picked up a Fuji, and Olympus P&S ,both with zooms and cases manuals. They all work well as tested by me. I would be willing to part with the Fuji, not the others -- I like the Oly, and my kid grabbed the Pentax for herself because of its size -- it is the smallest of the three.

I'm not an expert on naming conventions between US and others, so forgive me if the models don't exactly match.

I'm very partial to three p&s film cameras I own:

1- Oly mju-II zoom 170
2- Oly mju-III zoom 120
3- Nikon LiteTouch Zoom 130ED

All three have ED glass zooms.
The mju-II is slightly bigger and therefore fits my clumsy hands better and I like the controls at the top.
The mju-III is the sharpest of the Olys.
The Nikon is by far the sharpest but doesn't have spot metering - or I don't know how to set it.
All three are hopeless with max aperture at tele range. Then again, I use them with Superia 400 and it ain't too bad.
The red eye flash reduction on the Olys works better, I reckon.

Each with its own strength, I suppose.
Then again, at the prices nowadays on that online site, I don't care: I'll have one of each and enjoy them all!

I think I have every Pop Photography magazine from the heyday of the P&S era in a cabinet in the garage. Once a year and usually at the end of it they would do a best products review and from what i remember the Canon's would come out 1st or second. I can lookup a couple if your so interested to see what was noteworthy.

I did look for the Rollei Prego 90 and finally found one. The quality of the lens received good reviews so think this camera may work out nicely for my wife. The reviews did suggest that the viewfinder was pretty mediocre but that is less important than the quality of the lens.

Thanks for all the advice I received to my question.

My mistake. What I have is not an Olympus Stylus but an older Infinity with a Zuiko 35mm f/2.8 lens. One of the older AF cameras I believe.

Sandy

That older Infinity with the Zuiko 35/2.8 is a really good performer. That lens is a very sharp one. As I stated earlier, the Canon Sure Shot zooms are nice and come with a lot of very useful features, not to mention very nice lenses. You might check those out.

I have that older Infinity with the Zuiko 35/2.8 lens. Used it a lot some years ago and the results were great. I also used one of the Canon Sure Shot zooms back in the mid-90s. Loved it, but lost it in the surf off Portugal from a big wave that knocked my bakcpack off a rock. Also lost that day several LF lenses, my favorite Sekoinic exposure meter, and about 20 exposed sheets of 5X7 film.

Anyway, thanks to the good advice here I picked up seveal point and shoot camers for a song, including a Pentax 928, the Rollei Prego 90 and an Olympus 105. I am sure my wife will be satisfied with one of them!
