Canon AE-1 with lens 50 f1.8 is a very good choice

Olympus XA would be my first choice -- durable, cheap, precise. You could take two along, one for a spare. Standard 35mm lens covers most bases.

+1 on the XA. It fits in your pocket, has a very good quality lens for its size and one of the quietest shutters on any camera.
