a Glossy magazine called Photo News, http://www.photonews.ca/ is inserted into the Globe and Mail about once a quarter. The normal contents talk about the latest "computers that take pictures".. However I was pleasantly surprised this morning to see an Ilford Photo advertisement showing a still life of some rocks, with the catch line "just add Patience - What will you add"

The ad further lists the web site http://ilfordphoto.ca/ which is run by the Canadian Distributor. That site even has a provision to add items to a cart (run on the Shopify system) and purchase them from Amplis Photo. The site apparently will add shipping charges, and as I am currently stocked up I did not try placing an order to see how high those are. Unlike previous attempts to offer Ilford Products online in Canada, one can put as little as one roll of film into the cart.

the site also has links to "technical data" But has the same problem as the main Ilford site that drop down menus sometimes go away when trying to use the mouse to navigate.

That is good. Film photography needs more public awareness.
Fortunately Ilford is very active in marketing meanwhile: Have a look at their facebook and instagram accounts. Good job. And they have even started a nice youtube channel.

Direct online sales? That makes for a hard decision... Do I order online, and hope it gets delivered without a fuss, or do I wait till Saturday mornings and get into the used camera shop downtown to stock up.

On one hand I like supporting local business, but at the same time my wallet keeps whining at me for all the new camera gear that mysteriously collects after visiting said shop with plans to "Just buy a few rolls of film", or "Just pick up one bottle of fixer"...

But clearly the wallet just needs to shut up?

Their prices are higher the at The Camera Store in Calgary. http://thecamerastore.com

Plus shipping, any time A distributor offers direct sales, they have to walk a tight rope to avoid offending the dealers. On the other had in a country as big as Canada, their are many protential customers that are a 5 hour drive or even a plane ride away from their nearest camera store.

for a 36 exposure roll of HP5+ Henry's want 8.99 and Downtown Camera wants 9.49 (both Canadian Dollars which have been running 75% below US dollars) so the online price is not exceptionally higher. it is 5.69 US at B&H (about 7.49 CDN but their is import duty added to that)

But you know the Gear is much happier when it is loved by an active photographer.
