Retrophotographic have Vario Classic and Nuance Warmtone, not sure if that's the same thing.

Fotoimpex do not appear to stock this paper, though Lumiere does, and thanks for the link waileong. That said, boy oh boy it is expensive. £23.83 for 25 sheets of 12 x 91/2, and shipping would be on top of that. I am always keen to try a new semi-matt paper, but could not justify spending that sort of cash.

As an aside, I contacted Silverprint by phone to ask if they were to stock the paper. The young lady I spoke to was not too sure. I am to ring back Monday to speak to a man who will know. I am sure that if they were to stock the paper, the price would be quite competitive.

Just to explain,


The paper is available in glossy or semi-matt. It does sound like everything one could ask from a paper. Examples of prints on this paper can been seen on Wolfgangs own site.

E-mail Mirko on Fotoimpex.de. Sometimes their website isn't up to date, but as Ian says, they are the distributors of this paper, so they definitely have it.

Thank you all so much.

I see where I am going wrong. I downloaded the English version of the Fotoimpex catalogue, which is a 2007 version. I can see that the online German version of the catalogue does list the Variotone. It is still very dear at £23.83 to be a paper for everyday use, especially the amount of sheets I go through. I will give it a try though, but will wait for a U.K supplier, just to bring the cost down a bit (no postage)

And blimey, aren't the Fotoimpex team young , or am I just getting old!

Just to add,

Don't get me wrong, I know you always have to pay a little bit extra for quality, but I feel that there is always a learning curve with a new paper, and a lot of it ends up in the bin before you produce the first print that you are really satisfied with. I can remember Kentmere used to send out sample packs of about five sheets, just to give you a taster. I suppose I could always ask Adox, they can only say no

Yes, I suppose you have to expect to pay a little bit extra for a specialist paper. I am not familiar with the MG 532 II, but I still have a box of Kentmere Art Classic in the freezer, and that always cost that little bit extra. The Adox Variatone would have to be something very special, as the price of the Adox Fine Print Vario Classic is £27.60 for a box of 50 sheets of 12 x 9 1/2. Thats a huge difference in price.

I tried the Variotone and compared it to other papers. I also showed these images to other people to choose which they like most without knowing about which was which. Almost everyone chose the Variotone closely followed by the Ilford MG Warmtone and then came Ilford MG IV, Rollei Vintage etc. I would compare the paper more towards the Ilford Warmtone with a bright white paper base. I like the paper.

Stoo. It's all relative. Assuming that 50 sheets would be twice as expensive it works out at £48 for 50. RK Photographic want £46.97 for Ilford Warmtone FB which is only £1.03 cheaper. B&W paper seems to have gone through the roof price-wise in recent months. Maybe it as well it's produced by Ilford in the U.K. I'd expect any paper produced in Europe and tied to the euro to get very expensive in the next few months given the fall in the £ to euro exchange rate. OK RK may be more expensive than most but in the face of a recession the timing of the price increase is to say the least unfortunate.

Warmtone has always been expensive. Combine it with FB and in recent months it is certainly not the paper of choice for general prints if money is important which for most of us is likely to be the case in 2009.

P,U...Thanks for enlightening me to the expense of warmtone papers. I was not aware that they were so expensive. Of course this means that the Variotone pricing fits very well in to the market, and is competitively priced. It would seem that they had done their homework before releasing the paper.


Thank you Ruediger for a small glimpse in to your findings. Very helpfull indeed. I shall most certainly be giving the paper a try.
