Adofix P fixer, need some help.

I ordered some Adox Adofix P powdered fixer but sadly it didn't come with any instructions on how to mix it or use it.
Their website offers no help either. What I'd like to know is;

1. how do I mix this stuff (it says 'to mix 1000 ml' on the package) ?
2. how do I use it once mixed (dillutions?) ?

I know that perhaps these are silly questions but I'm honestly a little clueless. I've never used a powdered fixer before.
All help is appreciated thanks.

Not to get any instructions is very strange. Where did you order this powdered fixer from? I had a quick look at the Adox site and there is no mention of powder fixer

Looks like it is a discontinued product, doing some fancy Google-foo I did find the page where it used to be sold..

There is an "ask up on that page which is proably where to inquire, Note that in my search I got a stong hint that theis is the same product as CALBIE A300 or ORWO A300, so perhaps you can find a dutch version of the data sheet for those, (I could not find an english version)

Other than that - the porduct page gives a strong hint that it probably intended to use "Straight" - ie the one Litre package probably makes one liter of working strength fix. And the normal rule whould be to disolve the powder while string in about 3/4 of a litre and bring the volume up to make a litre, but again you may want to see if you can get MIRO at Adox to confirm.

From looking at the short product description on the Fotoimpex page, I have the impression this is an acidic Ammonium Thiosulfate based rapid fixer which comes as a powder. While Ammonium Thiosulfate is normally shipped as aqueous 60% concentrate, you can create it in powder form, which is both more expensive and less stable than the liquid concentrate. Evidently its higher product cost is offset by lower shipping cost.

Once you dissolve the contents of the package in 1000ml water, you seem to get the same kind of Rapid Fixer that you would normally get from liquid Rapid Fixer concentrate diluted 1+4.

The product appears to have been recently renamed from A300 to Adofix P. The Adox web page offers no information on its English language portal about either product name, but the German language version at least knows of A300:

- A liter of this fixer is enough for 1.4 - 2 m2 of photographic paper, or 8-10 rolls of film.
- Paper fixation time is 2 minutes
- Film fixation time is 4 minutes

What I find incredible is that the packet in which the powder arrives apparently has no instructions on it.

If it is a genuine Adox product then surely it isn't packaged in a plain packet, is it? Unless you mix it on arrival, is the user relying on remembering it is fix as he has no indication, days or weeks later as to what it was he bought.

Richardo, the page you linked to belongs to a different product. Adofix P needs longer fixing times, no idea why.

This what the package looks like. On the back are only some warnings but no instructions. Got it from fotoimpex.

Let's say I dissolve this in 1000ml of water to make a stock solution. Does it still need to be dilluted then (1+4 or 1+9) to make a working solution?

If it is A300, then the 1000ml should be the working solution, but A300 is called "acid fixer" ! So I think it is something else....

On the German shop homepage of Fotoimpex it is stated "Dieser Artikel wurde früher als A300 bezeichnet!" - which means that this article was formerly called A300. So you can use it like Calbe / ORWO A300.

I have only instructions for 5000ml, so you must do a little math...

for Film 3000 ml water + A300 then water to get 4000ml solution .... Fixing time 8-12 minutes
for paper 4000ml water +A300 then water to get 5000ml solution .... Fixing time 5-8 minutes

you should find instructions on the net, look for Calbe A300 or Orwo A300

Thanks, its says "Pulverkonzentrat für 1 Liter Gebrauchslösung" on the fotoimpex site. In other words it just a matter of mixing it with 1000ml of water to get the working solution.

I only ordered my powder from fotoimpex last week so it seems they renamed it recently and I already got it with new packaging.

I think that you will find that this product has gone through a number of name changes.

It is clear, however, that it was called A300, then Adofix P and now, once again, A300.

The new Adox packaging is blue or green and the older packaging was red.

It seems now that Mirko is now using the Adofix name only for liquid rapid fixers.

So I think we can assume that you have A300.

The instructions are that :

It is an Acidic universal fixer for film and paper.

Powder fixer for 1 liter.

Acidic fixers work more slowly than express fixers and are therefore expecially good for Baryt papers.

The powder is extremely shelf-stable and the shipping weight is much less than with liquid concentrates.

Once mixed with 1,000ml of water it is at working strength.

Stated capacity (but you need to check this for yourself) is:

1 L of fixer (undiluted) will be sufficient for 15 20 films size 35mm.
1 L of fixer (undiluted) will be sufficient for 2,4 m² of paper.

Sounds like it is a thiosulphate fixer and not a rapid fixer and the label leaves a lot to be desired unless the customer knows that it simply makes 1000ml of fixer with no further dilution or can find this out which doesn't seem to be easy.

Makes it cheaper to make and cheaper to send, I suppose but a simple picture of a vessel on the label with the powder and water being poured into it up to a 1 litre mark solves the problem in all languages.

Thanks Michael, I realise that saying thiosuphate was not enough and it is sodium v ammonium that differentiates "ordinary from rapid, I had always assumed that a straight undiluted mix as in this case indicated sodium thoisulphate. All the rapid fixers I have heard of seem to have a further dilution to working strength applied to them.

So if the powdered straight( no further dilution) solution can be rapid fixer what does it lack in this case that other rapid fixers have that allows them to be further diluted to 1+ 4 or 1+9?

Thanks all for your replies. It tried it this afternoon by simply mixing it up with 1000ml of water and no further dilutions. It worked just fine. Still I think it's annoying that no instructions are given on the package.
