Want to Buy Adams print

A guy in work,a mechanic,has renovated his house and has a large hall, he asked me if I could recommend a photograph for a kind of 'feature wall'. I told him Moonrise over Hernandez would be my choice,I was half joking with him.But he went researching it and just won't let it go.my question is can he get a decent print of this that won't cost a fortune and get him off my back

It's probably available at nearly any poster or art shop. I have a framed copy that was purchased from one of those chain poster shops at a mall for cheap.

An original would set him back thousands of dollars, but a good poster can be had for less than $20.

No. Anything big, print wise, from Adams, will cost. Ansel Adams Gallery does not even have Moonrise as a digital reproduction option. There are some nice ones though. Send him over to their website. Posters will be kind of cheap but no one, outside a dorm room, wants a poster on a feature wall.

For a feature wall, a Cibachrome/dye destruction print would look good and can be had for a lot less than an Adams print.

Alas, you can only get digital prints now. Used to be you could get a real silver gelatin print from this service, but now only from digital scans...

That's because you're assuming that you can't get a silver print from a digital file. Download it and have Mpix print it on Ilfospeed Rapid RC, which is a real b/w paper that can be exposed with a laser from a digital file. You can't tell that from any other RC print when it's done.

Yes, I am fully aware of that process, but its just not the same as having a master printer make one from the original negative like they used to do.

Now, they just ship you the file and you don't get the interpretation of a master printer. Not the same...
