Also,

This is a really bad example of what really went down with this whole thing. If you really understood how Kiera felt about all this, you would be happy.

She specifically chose a photographer to shoot her on film, she said that film photographers tend to see the real person while digital photographers (or photographers that never came up in the film era) tend to see what they can turn you into (I'm paraphrasing).

Every conversation I've ever had with Kiera tells me that she's one of the most genuine and sincere actors out there and I was really proud of her for doing this.

Of all the places, you guys should be excited she chose a film photographer and FILM to be used for these images.

I've frequently found myself, while photographing anyone, finding beauty even when that person... or society, may not see it right away. I can feel a very deep sort of empathy,
and I try to show the beauty that is there, without resorting to taking a bunch of snaps, then fixing the model in poste.
It may sound wierd, but sometimes, it feels almost like Love. Nothing creepy or lasting beyond the session, but a certain connection during the shoot, and when it's there, I know I'll like what I see in the results.
Kiera, in her natural form, would be very easy to photograph, I think. She's very beautiful without any modifications at all.

As for her protest... I think people will continue to do what they've always done. There are entire industries built up around it... from makeup to cosmetic surgery. I don't see a third method going away very easily.

there is no point in arguing about the images in the article.
NSFW or whatever ... the article's images were what they were, and to some i suppose it is too much ?
im glad she took a stand, wanted film, didn't want PS work, its refreshing.

thanks stone for your personal insights seeing you have met her in person....

i probably agree with more of what you say than you might think, often times i just don't agree with HOW you say it ...
then again, if everyone was a mild-mannered shoeshine-boy life would be pretty boring

Why do I feel the protest is more about the model realizing she is being paid to be used. My daughter went to NYC to be a model the year that 6 feet and 100 lbs. was the sudden swerve in fashion shoots. She spend a summer being rejected at first glance at every call. She went back to college and on with her life. I do not see great sameness in your posted work. I see great differences of eye and art. What caused the huge ripple in the force? It would seem those gathered here are into collecting and perfecting the images of all that is delightfully different. I'll shut up and crawl back in my hermits cave. Some how I thought the world had learned that greatness comes from diversity. I'll cling to that.

hi gleaf,
i understand what you are saying, and maybe her protest is a combination of things. i think to be a model or actress or photographer for that matter
you realize you are something to be used to fulfill someone else's vision. in the case of a model, you are the icon wearing the clothes, the actress(or actor )
you do as directed by the director &c, and as a photographer ( still or moving ) you are the camera operator, still doing what you are being directed to do
(at least for paid, and some commission work. )
maybe the actress/model didn't mind the first part, but becoming the blank canvas for someone else's beauty montage, INSTEAD of actually being
the icon became the problem? beauty - photography and fashion have always been about art and iconic idealism.

i know wheni make a negative, sometimes it becomes a straight print with limited burning and dodging
and other times it becomes part of a more elaborate thing ( burning dodging, chemical bleaching, hand retouching, painting, reducing some paint, using crayons
and a few other things ) maybe she didn't want to be the more elaborate thing because she believed she was the straight print
and this was her way of saying this.
i couldn't agree more that greatness comes from diversity ... eventually this won't matter ... the japanese have
invented (and have been using ) robot models .... i wish i had an asimo
