hi gleaf,
i understand what you are saying, and maybe her protest is a combination of things. i think to be a model or actress or photographer for that matter
you realize you are something to be used to fulfill someone else's vision. in the case of a model, you are the icon wearing the clothes, the actress(or actor )
you do as directed by the director &c, and as a photographer ( still or moving ) you are the camera operator, still doing what you are being directed to do
(at least for paid, and some commission work. )
maybe the actress/model didn't mind the first part, but becoming the blank canvas for someone else's beauty montage, INSTEAD of actually being
the icon became the problem? beauty - photography and fashion have always been about art and iconic idealism.
i know wheni make a negative, sometimes it becomes a straight print with limited burning and dodging
and other times it becomes part of a more elaborate thing ( burning dodging, chemical bleaching, hand retouching, painting, reducing some paint, using crayons
and a few other things ) maybe she didn't want to be the more elaborate thing because she believed she was the straight print
and this was her way of saying this.
i couldn't agree more that greatness comes from diversity ... eventually this won't matter ... the japanese have
invented (and have been using ) robot models .... i wish i had an asimo
