For a modern take the subject a good read is Kandel's Reductionism in Art and Brain Science. I spend much of my photographic energy making abstract compositions using what I've learned from studying the compositions of abstract expressionists and color field painters. I have always felt there is much more to explore in that area for photographers.

Exactly. I started photographing in the early 1950's, so was less aware of the abstract expressionists than I later became. I have considered my early influences to include the painters Klee, Mondrian, Modigliani, Kandinsky,Braque and Picasso.

Thanks for suggesting Kandel's book.

Killing it with that saxophone photo.

I really enjoyed 60 fotos by Moholy- Nagy recently and Lichtbild und datenbild (its in english and german thankfully) - two very different takes on abstractionism but both mindmelting.
