Some of the confusion I think that some folks are experiencing vis-à-vis WordPress is the "blogging platform" connotation. While it was originally designed for blogging, it's now considered a Content Management System (CMS). Several other options exist and each one has its own pluses and minuses . My site is currently running on ModX, but my developer (AKA my beautiful and talented wife) wants to transition me to WordPress at some point. (turns out that Microsoft bought up ModX and is letting it die on the vine)

A good CMS is really nice because it allows you to make changes to the content of your site without screwing up anything else (and incurring the wrath of your developer).

Having recently transferred my sites (one of which was WP) to a new host, I revisited the WP platform again from the nitty–gritty and found no easy way to make the transfer, for the normal user (please provide simple WP transfer info if anyone has found otherwise). So failing the above, my advice would be to make certain you will be with the same host for awhile, or this could be a major problem in the long run.

Don't get me wrong. Content management systems (CMS) are the way to go, and I love WP. But WP site transfer appears to be a headache at this point, so I would suggest looking into other CMS platforms as well.

^ migrated my WP site from wordpress.com to my own server with relative ease actually.

built-in to Wordpress is an import/export feature that makes it a snap.
