Tore my darkroom down today because of home sale. Same darkroom for twenty years, always a place I could go and forget all the worries of the day. Won't have a new one for 6 months or more, but it will still be wet!

Moving every three years or so as I have done for the past 30 years, I have set up and torn down many darkrooms over the years. Every one of them my "favorite," a place of sanctuary and sanity, a place to escape. I remember each and every one fondly and miss them -- until I go into my current one and start souping some film or developing some prints! Mourn the passing, but celebrate the new birth! )

I feel your pain. Had to gut mine of 14 years last year to dry the basement out. After getting the basement dry and fighting a cataract and the ensuing surgery.......I just about have mine back up. Starting from scratch with a clean slate was fun. Another couple of weeks of moving stuff from storage on the second floor to the basement (oh those 51 yr old knees!!!) and we should be fully functional.

Yup, I give you my condolences. I know how you feel. I got rid of my house 4 months ago. I learned how to print in that old, tiny, stinky darkroom. A lot of swearing and tears of joy left in those walls. One can build new state-of-the-art darkrooms, but they will never be like your first.

Try and count yourself as lucky

Now you can work on impoving your darkroom.

Though, I know it is hard to move you working space, I have worked in labs and gotten attached to things I see in the late hours... When moving, things are never the same, but sometimes they do get better.

Steve, I know the pain you are suffereing, you have temporarily lost your best friend. I went through this trauma twice in a few short years in my early photographc days and resolved the problem by having a substantial wooden shed (darkroom) built. Since then I have moved house 3 times and simply hired a crane and lorry, transported the darkroom to the new location, booked the plumber and electrician to make the necessary connections and have been printing within 4 days of leaving the old location.

I, too, feel your pain. My darkroom uses an automatic, diaphragm activated, intermittent sump pump which went awry about two weeks ago. I can fix it myself (it needs a new diaphragm) but the part will take three weeks to get. So for five weeks at least I feel disoriented and anxious.

If digital finally takes over the world and neccessary traditonal materials finally give out I think a lot of us are going to have to enroll in a twelve step program;-)

I, too, know how you feel. It's been seven months since we moved. On the bright side the new darkroom is nearly complete and it will be the biggest and best equipped that I've ever had. Chin up!
