Interesting image, sounds like HCB had a good day!
Re nude photography. People should shoot whatever they want, of course. But I've long since abandoned any notion that these images are devoid of sexuality. They are on some level meant to titillate, and specifically meant to titillate men. There are of course certain exceptions, and there are levels here of course. That Weston is more obviously a formal experiment. But of course, he chose to do that with a woman's body. Jokes about nudie pics to me are more honest than acting like we're all in tiptoeing on holy ground.
Also, doesn't that date say 1989? An aging HCB wanted to spend an afternoon in 1989 with two young women sans clothes. We can all act like the impetus for that kind of activity is ART with a capitol A, but I think we all know there are other reasons why men might want to do that. I like the image! It's got a great texture in the grain and it captures a certain kind of mood that makes me think about my younger days living in Brooklyn.
Fav photographers working in nudes right now: Mono Kuhn, Alec Soth, Ryan McGinley. Ryan McGinley in particular captured the sexual and stylistic zeitgeist of my generation, folks who turned 20 in the early 00s. Alec Soth makes the least sexual, and most uncomfortable nudes in the bunch. He really makes you embrace what you're seeing and feel a little embarrassed about it. Mono Kuhn's work is just gorgeous.
I shot some nudes once. But I couldn't get over the thought that I just wanted to hang out with naked women.
