Cartier-Bresson resigned from Magnum in 1966 and gave up photography in 1973. He went back to drawing and painting.

Here is a rare nude HCB shot between modelling sessions for Bresson.

So why are nude shots so rare - HCB photographed ? Better is to ask why he hasn't shot more of it?
Because he missed allways the "right" moment?

with regards

PS : Perhaps he was unable to feel the right moment with nude shots - your examples did documentary it (just from my point).

Is there some reason you can’t use the proper word for pubic hair. This time this the 1800’s

Dunno. He took one of his wife with her legs twisted up. But girlie photos were not his thing it seemed.

I like fur, I like cupcakes for breasts. Nothing illegal about it...is there? Same with the control freaks that tell you don't shoot people without permission. If it is not illegal I do as I like.

You can think and do whatever you wish just as I can think your use is tacky and crude

And by the way I do
Know+the=difference between hair and fur

I'm with you Ann, crude and tacky. It's the 21st century, I would have hoped we evolved from crude terms, this isn't the boys locker room in jr. high.

I have no personal objections to nude photography, but I do hate to see it on forums like this mainly because it brings out the worst in people. Or, perhaps it just brings out the worst of people. Either way, this is a public place and should be treated as such (not that I'm condoning such crude behavior in private, but there's no excuse for it here).

I don't care who took it or what words you use. It's not that great a shot.

HCB was a street shooter ... obviously, he was wise to stick to what he was good at.

Hard to believe so many people so upset about a nude photo by one of the world's most famous and important photographers, or a word used in the commentary. This isn't the public library with kiddos running around. Fur vs. hair. Jeeeeezus, what a thing to worry about. At least it's there, as Bill Maher asked at the end of some comments, "What's pubic hair?"

Ann, regardless of all of the words, the bottom line is that I agree with you. You can be correct and still crude and all combinations in between. Remember that the OP has been "censured" before here on Photrio.

It’s not that it is illegal. It’s that you’re being disrespectful, obliviously so.

Most people here say "to shoot" and some say "to soup"... and this is seen as normal...

Love colloquialism, nothing said is derogatory, some need to build a bridge and get over them selves. World be a boring place if we all thought and talked the same.
Don't think men are very good at nude photography, seems awkward and unnatural mostly. Women tend to do a better job.....guess thats sexist.

The Victorians strike again!

They have a lot to answer for.

With the Victorians though, the 'slang' words were more from respect than disrespect. They used words like belly and backside because the proper naming of body parts,ie. stomach and buttocks etc. was seen as improper. Expecting. With child. In the Family Way etc. Any description of pregnancy must not use the word pregnant.

Some are trying to bring that back, insisting that certain medically correct terms are inappropriate. Whoever came up with the 'preferred term' for the ______ as in the ______ monologues must have an emotional age of 6.

Agree with summicron1, the pic isn't very good. I've seen more artistry in girlie mags.

There are much better "colloquialisms" that could be used that are less demeaning. . Honestly, I have no issues with tastefully photographed nudes, I shot nudes and boudoir photos early in my career, these days I find the genre trite and banal. I've never been comfortable with "locker room talk, maybe it's because I only have sisters, and oh yeah, five daughters. I take issue with assholes who objectify and demean women.

Interesting image, sounds like HCB had a good day!

Re nude photography. People should shoot whatever they want, of course. But I've long since abandoned any notion that these images are devoid of sexuality. They are on some level meant to titillate, and specifically meant to titillate men. There are of course certain exceptions, and there are levels here of course. That Weston is more obviously a formal experiment. But of course, he chose to do that with a woman's body. Jokes about nudie pics to me are more honest than acting like we're all in tiptoeing on holy ground.

Also, doesn't that date say 1989? An aging HCB wanted to spend an afternoon in 1989 with two young women sans clothes. We can all act like the impetus for that kind of activity is ART with a capitol A, but I think we all know there are other reasons why men might want to do that. I like the image! It's got a great texture in the grain and it captures a certain kind of mood that makes me think about my younger days living in Brooklyn.

Fav photographers working in nudes right now: Mono Kuhn, Alec Soth, Ryan McGinley. Ryan McGinley in particular captured the sexual and stylistic zeitgeist of my generation, folks who turned 20 in the early 00s. Alec Soth makes the least sexual, and most uncomfortable nudes in the bunch. He really makes you embrace what you're seeing and feel a little embarrassed about it. Mono Kuhn's work is just gorgeous.

I shot some nudes once. But I couldn't get over the thought that I just wanted to hang out with naked women.

I have no problem with nude art. It has been around for 2000 years (at least)

Tried it myself in the=mid 80s and was terrible

My favorite nudes happened to be by Ruth Berhard
Nor do I feel I am a prude. I taught sex education for over 20 years and in the mid 80s worked the=AID s hot/line and I don’t embarrass easily am not a fan of “locker room talk”
