Hi Everyone, sorry but this may seem like a silly question, but I'm about ready to mix (first time ever with raw chemicals) some lith developer (D-85 formula from Unblinking eye). The formula says Water to make 1 litre. Does this mean to add 500 ml to the previous 500 ml for a total of 1 L, or add 1 L for a total of 1.5 L ?

Thanks
Steven

D-85 Two Solution Lith Developer

Solution A
Water at 125° F 500 ml
Sodium sulphite 36.5 g
Boric acid crystals 9.4 g
Hydroquinone 28 g
Potassium bromide 2 g
Water to make 1 litre

Solution B

Water at 90 ° F 500 ml
Sodium bisulphite 11 g
Sodium sulphite 1 g
Paraformaldehyde 37.5 g
Water to make 1 litre

Mix solutions with good ventilation. Mix 4 parts A + 1 part B for use.
You may substitute 82.5 millilitres of acetone for the paraformaldehyde.

"Water to make one liter" means exactly what it says -- the solution to that point will be a bit more volume than the 500 ml of water you started with, because the chemicals you've added will add a small amount of volume even after fully dissolving. So, at the end of mixing each solution, you add just enough water to bring the final volume up to one liter (it'll be a smidge less than another 500 ml).

when you are finished you will have 1 liter - it is hard to know how much water that is to start with because of the space taken by the chemicals. add chemicals and then add water until you have one liter of solution
