A Question form my Dad

He has just purchased a Zeiss Ikonta 531/2
the shutter speeds do not correspond with his meter for example the meter will give f8 at 30th he has a choice of f8 at a 25th or a 50 th.
He wants me to ask the forum what would you choose, I have given my opinion
but this forum fascinates him and he may join when he gets back to Spain.
Mainly shooting Foma 400 so it has a good exposure latitude.

Just go with the closest speed, and err on the side of too much rather than too little with BW neg film. Chances are the speeds aren't that accurate anyway.

I always go with the film speed closest to the meter reading without going over it - ie: in your example choose 1/25th of a second rather than 1/50th. With few exceptions, it's always better to err on the side of overexposure.

The standard speeds changed over the years. The convention is: for 1/25=1/30, 1/50-1/60, 1/100=1/125 etc. The difference is so small that you won't know the difference. Additionally, if you look at the tolerance on old mechanical shutters, it is + 50%, so they aren't what you think they are anyway!
